U2 on Later... With Jools Holland

Today U2 performed on Later... With Jools Holland as part of their promo tour for Songs of Innocence. A live half-hour episode was broadcast, and on Friday night an hour-long episode with additional footage will be aired.

U2 bookended tonight's broadcast with the opening and closing songs. In between were performances by Sam Smith, Zola Jesus, Interpol, the Alvin Brothers, and Slaves. U2 began the episode with the live debut of "Volcano". It was performed by the full band in electric form. Of course, "Volcano" has kind of been played live before - it borrows some elements from "Glastonbury", an unreleased song performed live in 2010.

U2 wrapped up the show with "Every Breaking Wave". It was played on piano like at previous promo shows, beginning with just Bono and Edge. They were soon joined by a string section like on Jo Whiley's show last week, and then Adam and Larry joined in for the final part of the song.

A third song was not broadcast tonight, but should appear in the extended Friday episode. It was the live debut of "California (There Is No End to Love)". The debuts of "Volcano" and "California" tonight bring to six the total number of Songs of Innocence songs played live. This equals How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb's record for most new songs performed on a promo tour.

If you want to see "Every Breaking Wave", the good folks at U2Spain have posted a video.

As noted above, there should be extra footage of U2 on Friday's episode. Our database listing for this performance is here.
