U2's Los Angeles #2 setlist, 21/05

Today, U2 performed their second of two shows at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena, in the greater LA area. This is the first of only three cities on the North American leg to get more than one show—Chicago and East Rutherford also get this honour. When U2 first played the Rose Bowl in 2009, they did just one show, though of course that was with the 360 Tour set-up that permitted seat sales behind the stage, and there were two subsequent LA-area shows in 2011 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

Tonight's setlist featured a slightly altered order. A Sort of Homecoming—an early highlight of the tour—was mysteriously omitted from tonight's show. This means that the Joshua Tree keeps creeping closer to the start of the main set. The first three shows had five songs before the album, then four songs at the fourth, and tonight there were just three before the band began Where the Streets Have No Name. This means Mothers of the Disappeared was played the earliest it has ever featured in a setlist, fourteenth song of the night, beating last night's placement at fifteenth. It had previously been played sixteenth on 12 December 1987 and at the first three shows of this tour.

Furthermore, With or Without You was played the second-earliest it has ever appeared in a live set, sixth song of the night, equal with 16 December 1989. Only 25 November 1989 is in front, when it was played fifth. Bono spotted signs requesting WOWY's live-only verse Shine Like Stars, and although he did not sing it in the traditional spot at the song's climax, he did speak-sing "shine like stars in the summer night/shine like stars in your light" over Edge's solo.

The previous shows have featured just one extended encore, but tonight U2 did two encores. The first encore began with Miss Sarajevo, the first time it has opened an encore, and Bad. The band then took another break before coming back for the second encore. Unreleased new song The Little Things That Give You Away returned to the setlist to close the show, after not featuring in yesterday's setlist.

The upshot of the variations (by which we mainly mean the omission of A Sort of Homecoming) is that this show had the shortest setlist of the tour so far: 21 songs. The previous shows have had 22, or 23 in the case of Seattle. The last time U2 played a show with no more than 21 songs in the setlist was over a decade ago on 24 November 2006.

The full setlist was:
