Performance

Absolutely the dog's bollocks from start to finish. I notice a number of tonight's song performances are cited as the definitive ones and I can understand why. Even before the end of the opening Mofo-Follow salvo I knew it was going to be a show out of the very top drawer. Edge was on fire tonight and Bullet was particularly good, as was HMTMKMKM. Highlight for me though was Please (far and away my favourite Pop track) leading into Streets, which just worked sublimely. I actually can't fault it in any way to be honest. Not sure what was up with Bono during this show, he was acting quite bizarrely at times but he was in fine voice which I guess is all that matters....

Sound

The FM recording is clearly the best and as PopMart shows go this is as good as any and substantially better than most. It goes under various monikers but the most common are the aforementioned "Pump It Up George" and also "Le Cock-Up". A really clear and deep recording and an absolute must-have for any U2 fans collection.
Recording: "Pump it up, George" - 5 stars

Audience

Given the conditions the crowd was amazing, probably in no small part because we all had hypothermia and were trying (unsuccessfully) to get warm. Frequent reference was made to the deluge during the show and of course the Beatles classic "Rain" was a nice touch at the end. Not sure if that was a sideways stab at George Harrison or merely a comment on the meteorological situation (or both) but it's one of my favourite songs and I loved it! Interesting to note that the attendance for this show was about 70,000 which is dramatically less than the turnout for Zooropa at Roundhay in '93. Presumably the fact that this previous show was on a Saturday had a bearing, whereas tonight's aquatic sequel took part on a Thursday?.... Anyhow, the people who did brave the elements made a lot of noise and contributed their bit to a top night.

Overall

It was raining heavily when we arrived and it never relented all day and evening. Proper lumpy Yorkshire rain too, the sort where you get saturated after barely a minute! Support this time around came courtesy of Cast who were okay. I've never been so cold and wet for so long, yet it was a brilliant show and a fantastic night. This isn't my favourite U2 period song-wise but nonetheless the guys absolutely nailed it and visually it was superb. I remember the huge video screen along the back was very vibrant and crystal clear - the colours were so vivid.
In short The Best, on top form. Once again I felt very privileged to have been there!
