Performance

This was the end of a long shift for the band at a high profile venue and the mercy of the lupine British press. They were - as will each of the dates I have seen here - slick, joyful and completely engaging.

Audience

The audience tonight were a healthy mix of the weary London commuter and the weary international traveller. The atmosphere was brilliant, but more reverent than raucous.

Overall

Night #6 at the Big Top that is the Millennium Dome in North Greenwich was the last in a blistering sequence of gigs in London.

This was a late call and tickets were only secured on Monday - on a whim - lest another six year gap transpire.

The setlist included Gloria up front, Desire and Party Girl doing sterling work in the mid-set, while Bad and 40 closed out a ten-day residency for the band at the o2.

There were no Adele or Chris Martin cameos, despite the rumours, although Noel Gallagher was spotted stage left belting out 40 from the RedZone. Mercifully, Two Shots or Happy, One Shot of sad stayed in the sound check while 11 O Clock Tick Tock remains the Holy Grail.

A tattooed lady called Danielle from the south coast with electric blue hair and a Ramones tee found her way onto the eStage, whereupon she almost froze in terror. Bono even tried a Bull McCabe-style Strip the Willow, but no luck, even as we all thought the Edge was winding up to resurrect the guitar solo at the end of Mysterious Ways. At least she scored half a bottle of champagne! Fair play to her; it must be pretty terrifying.

The band too were in more reserved form than last Friday night, and Bono's stage patter was reflective rather than boisterous. He explored the origins of I Will Follow and Bad, as well the his childhood as the standard into to Iris. That's not to say that they lacked for energy; this remains a high octane show with only the Every Breaking Wave/ October/ Zooropa sequence providing respite.

And the Edge never sweats. I've been his side of the stage for three gigs in a week and not a drop. Makes you wonder if the real Edge isn't tied to a chair somewhere backstage while RoboEdge takes his place.

Let the record show that it was this reviewer who, having had plenty practice catching bits of Milton during Until the End of the World, single-handedly caught Bono's paper plane during Bullet the Blue Sky.

I have a sore temptation to sell all my worldly goods and take my entire family on the road following the wondrous circus that is The Innocence and Experience Tour. But tomorrow it is, for this fan at least, back to the real world, albeit proudly clutching my paper jet...
