setlist

Performance notes: Tickets for entry cost £3. U2 are billed as "U.2." and receive a lacklustre response from the crowd despite the band's - especially Bono's - efforts to gain their attention and generate enthusiasm. The most extreme example of this is when Bono leaps off a PA stack during The Electric Co., rips his pants wide open, and yells at the crowd "I'm wearing these for you! I'm wearing these for you!" U2's set was filmed to position cameras for headliner Echo & The Bunnymen, who were being recorded for the film Urgh! A Music War.

Performance

Second night of the Boy tour and we're in London. This is the first recoding we have from the tour and the first setlist that we know of. The band kick off with the non-album single, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock and they sound really up for it. A good performance that segues nicely into I Will Follow. It's full of pace, very energetic. An Cat Dubh is next and it moves effortlessly into it's album partner, Into The Heart. Both songs really show off the abilities of the band members I think. The first two songs were straight up rock songs, with speed and energy, but they show that they can slow things down too. The crowd really appreciated the pairing. The pace picks up again with Stories For Boys. Good performance but there's a few mistakes from The Edge. It sounds faster than the album version, as did I Will Follow. A Day Without Me now, and they sound comfortable playing this even though they've played it a lot less than the other songs. Very enjoyable. Twilight is equally as enjoyable and comfortable for the band. Next up is The Electric Co. and Bono messes up some of the lyrics before proceeding to try and get the crowd going. A potentially good effort had Bono not overdone it. I'm not surprised he's clearing his throat before the final song, a second 11 O'Clock Tick Tock. A good way to close the night, though Bono continues to shout excessively at the crowd. Tomorrow night they play The Marquee Club, though we won't hear anything until they play Scarborough in five nights time.

Sound

It's not great but it's not terrible. It's an old recording, but it's certainly listenable. It is muffled but everyone is distinguishable.

Audience

The audience don't really seem that interested. They welcome the band onto the stage but don't really offer anything to the gig. A warm applause for An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart is nice. Despite Bono's attempts to fire the crowd up for the final couple of songs, they don't get any more involved. He probably scared them during The Electric Co. - they do offer a round of applause at the end of the gig though in appreciation of a good performance.

Overall

Overall, a good show. Very early in the Boy tour but U2 are no strangers to performing. A good setlist that focuses on songs from the Boy album sandwiched between two performances of 11 O'Clock Tick Tock. There are quite a few mistakes that creep into the young band's performance, but it's an enjoyable night nonetheless.
