Performance:
The unmistakable Larry Mullen Jr. helps to kick us off as the band tear straight into Gloria. The band are midway through the third leg of the War tour and sound on top form. Adam's bass slapping around the festival grounds, Larry's drums pulsating from the back and The Edge's guitar driving the melody throughout. I Threw A Brick Through A Window is next and follows a very similar pattern to Gloria, with Larry laying the foundation for The Edge and Adam. Bono sounds very good too, though nothing really challenging his vocal range yet. Adam's bass sounds incredible. Typically the band segue effortlessly into the next number, A Day Without Me, and this really highlights the energy and drive of the young band. Impeccable timing from Bono as he shouts "Hold it!" to the band before they head into the bridge, a snippet of Dear Prudence fills the space perfectly. Once Bono has pronounced himself Irish, the band continue with the black cat, An Cat Dubh. As usual, it leads into Into The Heart, a song that gives The Edge the chance to show off his simple, yet most effective playing style. Now it's Adam's time to shine as he leads off with that iconic introduction to New Year's Day beginning a run of four songs from the War album. The band are clearly on top of their game as they continue to play songs without flaw. After more Bono nonsense, the band begin Surrender. The Edge backing bono up on vocals, tight performance all round as Bono tries to give the crowd something to sing about. Two Hearts Beat As One is next and it, for me, has already established itself as a true classic in the set. The tone of The Edge's guitar is perfect, the rhythm is infectious. Let's Twist Again is throw in towards the end, just prior to a delightful instrumental performance from the band as Bono is off playing with the crowd. Sunday Bloody Sunday follows on in a typical throbbing fashion, an excellent effort topped off with a reprise. An extended Electric Co. closes the main set as Bono embarks on a journey to the top of the staging whilst the band play on. Amazing.

For the encore, the band produce the lead single, live staple, and fan favourite from Boy - I Will Follow. This pushes Boy's representation up to five songs, one more than War at this stage. Great performance that sets us up nicely for the final song of the set. For the first time today, the band slow it right down with '40'. Perfect ending.

Audience:
Ok, they're barely audible throughout due to the nature of the recording but it doesn't take away any of the energy.

 

Sound:
Excellent throughout. There's a couple of small blips, but they don't affect the listening experience too much.

Overall:
A thoroughly energetic, confident performance from the band. Each and every song is delivered to the highest standard as the band drive their songs home with what must've undoubtedly been one the best performances of the weekend. A truly exceptional show that highlights the power that the band possess.

Performance: Firstly, I don't listen that much to early day gigs, it's not that I dislike that period, I just like the 90's much more. Although it's quite a small gig (running time is only one hour) it left a good impression of what U2 were standing for around that time. They played most of their (at that moment) best songs, although they didn't played 11 O'Clock, which is a shame. Bono's voice is fine (only low is the Give Peace A Chance snippet which sounds awful.), Edge, Larry & Adam are good too, although less energetic than six days later. Some nice speeches by Bono. Notable performances of A Day Without Me (Dear Prudence snippet), Electric Company (Larry's cymbals), Sunday Bloody Sunday , I Will Follow (very energetic, Edge's guitar) and Surrender (entire band). Audience: It's a soundboard so it's quite logical that you can't hear the audience that good. Only during some seconds of the gig you can hear them (when Bono shouts 'California!' for example). 3.5* Sound: Rated as 5-stars, I would give it 4-4.5* tops. There are a little cracks here and there and at some points you can't almost hear one of the instruments. It's not flawless. Overall: Very good War Tour - Gig, I would rate this as 4.5 stars for letting 11 O'Clock out. Must-have for the medium bootleg collectors as me. Highlights: A Day Without Me Electric Company Surrender Sunday Bloody Sunday I Will Follow Lowlights: They should have played 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, and the Give Peace A Chance is afwul.

Performance: A small gig in Devore, California from May 1983, just before the historic Live At Red Rocks performance, is a 13-song performance which definitely eclipses anything done before it and probably for the next few years after. These early performances are the best of the best for U2, as you get awesome renditions of the early material - raw and ready to go. Every single song is nailed - except for one snippet: Give Peace A Chance. I'd be asking to Give Chance Some Peace - it's utter tripe. I love the young lady and her utterly brilliant dancing skills during the Let's Twist Again snippet in Two Hearts Beat As One - and not a bad looker, either. A definite highlight (for me, anyway). You've gotta love the band's enthusiasm in these days. They're all over the stage, going from side to side, and are pretty free to go wherever they like (within possibility), which it hasn't changed so much in recent times, but they just seem less shackled here and more relaxed, less choreographed and staged. Audience: Enthusiastic and right into this 'New Wave' band. Great, great participation... Sound: FOR SOUND: The sound here is excellent (for 1983), but you do hear a lot of clipping, which was to be expected - most of these television broadcasts have the same problems from the early 80s. However, as a pro-shot, it's a soundboard and a good one at that, if not very good. The instruments are easy enough to pick up (Adam's bass in most songs is perfectly audible and so is Edge's guitar) and so is the audience at the end of each song. Sometimes the vocals get lost in the mix and the backing vocals too, but they're definitely there. No major issues with Larry's drumming, except sometimes it's mixed way too loud and that's where the distortion comes from. FOR PICTURE: The picture quality for this show is very nice, again more than acceptable for 1983, of course dependent on the video transfer method. You don't see too many artefacts or PQ errors you shouldn't be seeing - whether that's due to the condition of the master tapes or just damn good transfer by a genius, I don't know. Because it's a pro-shot, you get to see all the action - which is important for any kind of live film. Regarding direction, the whole video is directed beautifully and in the way a concert video should be. The camera keeps on the main subject at the time, moves with brilliant precision and just does what he's meant to do, which is directing the show in such a way that isn't seen anymore, even in U2's recent videos since the Elevation era. I also love the fact that during New Year's Day, the camera gets so close to the piano - which is another credit to the film crew. Overall: A great relaxed, fun gig and at times, even better than the Red Rocks release.

Performance: A nice gig from U2's early days. Just before climbing the legendary stage of Red Rocks the boys play a small gig on the US Festival in Devore. The band shows it's great shape and they're definitely pulling off a great show. Gloria is a great song and they play it very good here. Still, it's nothing more than an average version. ITABTAW/A Day Without Me is one of the best sequences they ever came up with and it's really awesome here. Especially A Day Without Me is fantastic, the highlight of the show. And one of those great snippets of The Beatles' Dear Prudence is involved, makes it awesome They're not completely able to pull it through tough. An Cat Dubh and Into The Heart are weak and New Year's Day is no good either. It almost sounds as if the boys are kinda tired of playing NYD. Things get fantastic after that again tough. Surrender is awesome, 2nd highlight. I would've prefered to see Seconds instead of Surrender, but they play Surrender awesome. Two Hearts Beat As One is great too, altough again just an average version. Sunday Bloody Sunday and TEC make a great end of the main set, but they're not legendary or special. Average versions, still great tough. The encore is more interesting. I Will Follow is brilliant, as it always was in the early days. It's hard, it's big and it's just rock n roll 40 is pretty good too, altough the snippet of Give Peace A Chance really sucks. Bono kinda fucks it up there. Overall a great gig, but there are certainly better gigs. Audience: Good crowd. Nice sing alongs, not annoying. But if I sense right they're more waiting for David Bowie to climb the stage. Heard better crowds, but for a crowd that isn't completely full of U2 fans they're great. Sound: Could easily be released as live album. Overall: A very nice boot just before the famous Red Rocks gig. The gig is good, they boys are in shape. I missed Seconds and the snippet of Give Peace A Chance doesn't work very well. A Day Without Me and Surrender are the highlights. Great sound, would easily fit as live album. It's nice to hear U2 just before their legendary first dvd performance, so it's worth a download. Nice boot too for if you don't have time for 2 hour gigs or so. Overall 4,5 stars worth.

Performance: a general good performance with the likes of New Years Day, Two Hearts beat as One, A Day Without Me and Surrender being the stand outs. And though hits such as Sunday Bloody Sunday and I will follow were far from the best i've heard, the mass cock up award goes to '40', its out of key ending and the odd 'give peace a chance' snippet, though i did like its spooky beginning Audience: its the festival so i won't be too harsh, many probably weren't there to see U2, and a few good sing alongs to songs such as Sunday Bloody Sunday give them a respectable 3.5 stars Sound: a great sounding bootleg, could be compared to the red rocks recording two shows later, 5 stars Overall: dispite the U2 coming out of the blocks with a great first 5 songs, a few bad choices performance and set wise could be seen as abit of a let down, still a great show and a great recording

Performance: The set gets off to a raucous beginning with an emphatic version of Gloria, and the band continue in this vein for much of the opening set up until New Year's Day - have to echo many of the plaudits re. A Day Without Me and the Dear Prudence snippet, great stuff. However, I did feel that things started to tail off with Surrender, and I felt the Let's Twist Again snippet in Two Hearts Beat As One was absolutely murdered. It's not my favourite song, and this version did little to curry much more favour with me. However, when in doubt, throw in Electric Co. - fantastic performance, even with the lengthy gap as Bono (as I understand it) goes walkies! This seemed to really get the crowd going again, and a rousing I Will Follow further sated the appetites. However, 40, wow - Bono murdered that lol! The little bits of improv. from Adam on the guitar did add to it, and I don't think the Give Peace A Chance snippet was a bad choice per se but OUCH talk about going out of tune... The band for the most part were on decent form - the clarity of Bono's voice at times was awesome, whilst the others provided a more than solid platform for Bono to play the crowds. However, 40 certainly leaves a bit of a sour taste in the mouth. Audience: To be honest, I couldn't hear them but I don't know if that was simply due to the fact that my speakers aren't amazing or whether they really were quiet - I tend to think it's a case of the former though, because at times you can really hear them cheering and screaming as any pent-up festival audience will do. Sound: The clarity of the sound is pretty good for a 25+ year old recording, but I have to question the mix - Bono's voice is the loudest thing going, whilst at times Edge barely came through. Adam and Larry were at a decent level throughout, but the balance between Edge and Bono's respective volumes was certainly a negative for me. Overall: As a rule, I'm not that fussed over the earlier years of the band's career, although I'm always up for listening to the odd boot here and then and all-in-all I wasn't disappointed. The band were on form and did a fine job in throwing out a performance that seemed to really gee up a festival crowd, but I can't say it'll be a boot that'll live long in my memory.

Performance: They nailed every song at this concert. How I love the performances of A Day Without Me, Two Hearts Beat As One, Electric Co, Gloria, I Will Follow, An Cat Dubh.....Great snippets too except for the one in '40'. Audience: A great audience. They certainly enjoyed this gig...Watch the video...one of the better audiences I've seen at festival gigs. Sound: Great recording. 26 years ago but crystal clear. Overall: Grab it now. The boys at their peak of the early years. Too many highlights to call them all.

Performance: 2 3 4 and lets go for a breathless ride. Since the first notes, the first shout of Gloria the boys give it all to you .. impressive load of energy since the start of the concert .. no time for rescue a bit that Larry threw a brick through a window .. of course the rhythm goes down a bit but not the intensity .. Larry and Adam incessant in covering Edge phrasings. Again no time to breathe A Day Without Me is launched to the faces .. nice Bono strumming while doing what he does best .. and he does he does .. wonderful little insert of Dear Prudence. Just the time for Bono to say they're not the usual British fashion band they're Irish and come to stay for long time .. maybe forever .. oh Bono how right you was, and the sinous black cat comes out in the form of the singer accompanied by the other all very well doing their duty. As usual An Cat Dubh leads to the sweet Into the Heart where we love to stay a while Thank you and the unmistakable pressing bass announce New Years Day .. wonderful lines by Edge on the powerful carpet laid by the rhytmic section .. awesome interpretation .. they play “U2 music” and the crowd can’t do anything else but Surrender to them at this point. Great Bono in keeping on drawing people along every time he can .. impressive considering what he’s doing on vocals since time 0 of the show .. considerable Edge backing him. Two Hearts Beat As One on Larry's beat .. Bono can't stop to dance and the crowd too i take it for sure … how they can't .. the song flows engaging towards one of the funniest snippet with Bono joking with not knowing the words of Let's Twist Again. Things become serious now for Sunday Bloody Sunday .. flawless one with all the feelings that it carries along .. emozional .. well it's Sunday .. nothing less. The cry to a very pulled and extended The Electric Co. With the band doing somersaults to permit Bono to climb the stage structure carrying the white flag with him .. from up there the snippets … awesome!!! That took a sure wash head by McGuinnes i guess before sending the boys for the encore. They still have it all for a rocking rousing I Will Follow .. nobody want to walk away everybody to follow. Usual instruments Exchange for the closer '40' leading people to the end .. with an almost without breath snippet of Give Peace a Chance. Audience: Being a soundboard there's not much to say about .. barely listenable .. not crowd fault though Sound: Great soundboard even for the period; all instruments perfectly clear; maybe guitar sometimes a bit distant but it's irrelevant Overall: An impressive breathless ride. The boys didn’t have too much time and they didn't waste a second. They put more than what they had (and we know how much it is) in this short festival set. Great set great perfomance great energy great mood .. everything great .. U2 at the top! One concert that plot the history of the band. Highlights: from Gloria to '40'
