1. Since a recent crash my DVD drive won't recognise DVD's (blank media or movies). I think I need a firmware upgrade for it.

The model of the drive is a 'Slimtype DVDRW - SOSW - 852S'. I've searched the internet but can't find anything clear and concise. Any help appreciated

I assume you have checked the company's website too...would be very strange if they don't have it.
  3. yea i've checked everywhere but can't get anything clear and concise. Im running XP. It is a problem limited only to DVD. The drive will willingly accept CD's and CD'roms but it's recognising DVD's as CD's. I had a complete system restore a few weeks ago and it hasn't been right since then
  4. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the dvd software. Are you using Nero by any chance? If you are and are still on version 6 try an upgrade to version 7 or try another program.
You could also start up the pc in safe mode and see if it works from there. If it works in safe mode then some other piece of software is causing a conflict.

pc's are great when they're working well but they have an amazing ability to drive you loopy when they go even slightly wrong.

they are like women (not all women incase there are any here). Absolutley brilliant when they are on form but when the go wrong, boy don't they do it well
  8. Uninstall Nero InfoTool if you have it - that can mess up your XP systems like never before.
