If your opinion is that Universal or U2 are raping the fans by making the remasters and Deluxe remasters - NO ONE is grabbing you by the ankles and shaking the money from your pockets. No one is holding you at gunpoint. No one is making you buy it.
One could argue that the Rolling Stones are sellouts. Album, tour, then yet ANOTHER Live Album and then yet ANOTHER "Hits" albums. That, to me is a sellout... Not FINALLY having all the material of an era remastered and in a nice deluxe package.
I don't see the remaster stuff as selling out. The 80's albums need to be polished up a bit, and there is a demand for not only the remasters, but all of the unreleased stuff as well. This is what? page 13 of a thread that for the most part is a lot of excitment.

Hate to say it, but U2's turned a lot of people off by releasing 3 Greatest Hits albums in the past ten years. (even if the 80s and 90s discs are completely different)

Some fair points made there, I'm currently having an epiphany and on further consideration am not sure now where I stand, in spite of previous comments lol I don't think anyone's "raping" anyone but it's a big carrot on a stick lol. And on the matter of sound quality, I don't really make much of it - the only time the quality of a recording comes to me is choosing bootlegs to download lol
So here we go again with the sell out and cash cow argument...
I wonder what equipment you guys use to listen to your CDs. The sound quality of the early releases is way below today's standards, so a remaster is really appropriate.
You even get the choice to buy the remastered album alone or a package with Bonus Material. Can't see a rip off or sell out. I would follow that argument if they would re-release those albums unremastered and with one single 'rare' track added. But they don't.
Agreed there..The sound sucks actually. Also a reason why I never listen to the early CD's on my music system. I do on my Zen, but trough the CX300's which give me perfect sound anyway. A remaster is definately welcome

i agree--I don't see it as a sell-out at all. I guess what bothers me is the ambiguity of putting out the remasters--of just putting out that carrot on a stick. I'm not a trained musician or anything, so i couldn't give a decent opinion on sound quality differences between the remasters and the old. If the motivation in re-releasing the albums IS to have a better sound quality and to introduce new, younger fans to their early stuff, then that's fantastic, and the boys are truly the smart businessmen they seem to be. I suppose I'm just concerned that they're simply releasing them for monetary gain, and that's where i was afraid McGuiness was coming in.
Reading the opinions on here, though, I realize I should have a bit more faith in the band I love, that they do have good intentions.
