Sound:
Ok somebody's going to have to explain to me the raitings system here. This was a recording riddled with muffled fuzz all the way through it. Parts of it sounded like Bono was gargling water - while there was a decent balance allowing for all three instruments to be heard equally, the low-quality affected vocals the most. I realise Bono had a sore throat this peformance but this recording was a real let down. It was a constant distraction which hindered my enjoyment of the whole show. It was almost unlistenable in parts. Opening of Bad was also cut out.
Performance:
It was obvious the boys were enjoying their time in Australia after skipping the country during JT. This was OUR tour - the following European leg just an afterthought. A decent setlist essentially looking like a JT line-up peppered with R&H tracks. Like most Lovetown shows, I feel it's 2 or 3 tracks short.
Highlights
Bono's revelry: "You are the noisest sons of bitches that ever came to a rock'n'roll concert", "With a red guitar, sometimes vanilla", "This is a song, it suits me to play because it's only got three chords and that's all I know. and referring to Edge "This goes to show that even a man with a haircut as uncool as that can play the coolest red guitar in the universe and play it with style!"

This boot would have been enjoyable if not for the sound. It was very hard not to let it affect the listening experience. It was just really appalling. Certainly doesn't warrant rating its been given here. 5.5/10

I'm not sure whether it's the way it's been encoded, but the sound here is terrible. It's not so bad you can't listen but it hisses heavily and muffles at any given time and sounds like it was recorded through a wall. The great thing is that unlike the next Adelaide tour bootleg (which was Zooropa), there is an actual audience that you can hear. Just for a soundboard it's not that great. Ah well.
I could hear the drums, guitar and bass really well but then I could hear the heavy winds too.
Performance
Memorial Stadium is a great place for a concert (the Rolling Stones obviously thought so too) as opposed to Apollo Stadium (now demolished and just a block of houses), Football Park and AAMI Stadium which U2 played when they arrived in the City of Churches for previous tours.
Unfortunately I didn't get to go to this one so it's a great souvenir. I thought during Streets was good: "I can sing!", as due to Bono's voice problems which seem to be a bit better but not brilliant. I should point out if it wasn't already known, that three Sydney shows were pushed over to November 1989 after New Zealand, due to those vocal problems. Also of interest is that songs from Rattle and Hum, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, War and Boy were all played...however nothing from October makes an appearance, much like Vertigo and Pop.
As aussiemofo says, Bad is cut, sadly, and if I remember on another show we reviewed from Lovetown, I said Love Rescue Me was pretty crap - and I'll say the same for this show. It probably killed BB King to only be doing maybe two or three shows a week as opposed to his five or six per week but he did a pretty sturdy job and deserves a round of applause for his awesome efforts right across this whole tour along with the BB King Orchestra.

Agreed on most counts. Enjoyed the "I can sing" as well. What would you give it overall? With sound factored in?
I'm not so sure that the encoding process of this boot has caused it to sound like it does. It's obviously just had one too many tape to tape transfers before it was openly shared. Maybe one day we'l get the master of 1st gen tape then it should be as good as DC perhaps.

About a 9. But on a U2start rating, for the five-star, I'd leave it at 3.5 for sound and performance. Which is about on par with a 9 or 90% rating anyway. But again all soundboards here (check Lovetown and Joshua Tree pages) are rated from 3 to 5 star - it's only TV and radio broadcasts that are always five star, regardless.
