I love his playing and tone too... not to get too far off topic but... I love that melodic 6-string bass type of tone that Hook, The Cure and Siouxsie & The Banshees use. Great stuff.

Ah, the '80's. Don't forget that great tone in The Cocteau Twins' "Heaven or Las Vegas".

Cocteaus! Fun stuff. Talk about glistening 'dream' pop. "Sugar Hiccup", anyone?

Just to get us back onto U2 , anyone have idea what the intro. noise on UTEOTW is? I'm thinking it's along similar lines to Gone with the "airplane" effect or whatever it was...

I think it's the siren of the "Fun Police" pulling us over for not talking about about U2.

Lmao, true true...but considering it was a song released....12 years before Remy even considered the release of U2start, something tells me that's highly improbably (unless, of course, Edge had foreseen such a question, seeing as he is from the future'n'all...)

Per Flood, in the September 1997 Guitar World feature article (page 61):
"The 'feedbacky' guitar tone heard in the intro and chorus' of "Gone" is a Korg SDD 3000 delay heavily fedback and going into a couple of fuzz pedals and a Whammy pedal. One of the fuzz pedals was a 'Fuzz Face'. I can't remember what the other one was, to be quite honest. (perhaps the Lovetone "Big Cheese"?, as it was used around that time?)

As for the guitar, Flood mentioned that it was a semi-hollowbody... Epiphone or a Gretsch. As Edge was using the GIbson 330TD (similar to a Epiphone Casino) and Gretsch Country Gentleman around this time, it would lead me to believe that it was one of these guitars.

"Until The End Of The World" intro sound is a bit of a secret. I've not met any guitarist that's replicated that tone. And if you were to mention a U2 tribute band, I'd tell you that they are indeed using a sample of Edge's sound.

From what little bit I have gathered, it is guitar AND vocal plus the obvious - TONS of processing. Edge was using the Gibson 330TD during this period. The 330TD, like a Casino, has P-90 pickups. P-90's pickups are single coil and can also be microphonic to some extent. I have a 'feeling' that some vocalization INTO the pickups > thru some of Edge effects > probably including a WH-1 Whammy, as it was a new toy for Edge during this time, might be some of the ingredients.

"The Fun Police, they live inside of your head, the Fun Police, they're coming to arrest me - oh nooooooooooo"

Oh wait... that was the DREAM Police, that Cheap Trick were singing about. Never mind.
