I recently was asked about "petitioning" Principle Management" and U2 to release various video footage.
True: This is how Slane was eventually released.
Yes: Putting together a well written petition, asking for a certain item (not multitudes of items), and with an overwhelming amount of signatures can show U2/PM that the fans overwhelmingly want said "release".
But at this point in time, there are some things to consider... and I'm not trying to pee on anyone's parade...
1) They are finishing a new album
2) They are releasing remasters and deluxe remasters of Boy thru War. If there was Boy thru War footage that they thought was good enough to put out... they'd have probably made a super-deluxe box set - like the Joshua Tree box.
3) There are plans to release remasters of Under A Blood Red Sky and The Unforgettable Fire...
4) ... plus a DVD of Red Rocks...
So in that, U2 have a lot of things coming out between July 2008 and November 2008. (Unsure of the UABRS and TUF release dates).
That many releases PLUS the obvious 2 version of a single PLUS DVD single before the album comes out... and another set of 2 singles and DVD single within a month or two of the albums release... which is the norm...
...again... that means there is a LOT of U2 product coming out between July 2008 and January 2009.
So a petition is a good idea. It is far better than a letter, email or phone call making various requests. Requesting ONE specific release is good. Not "please release all unreleased footage.
But with the above list... and eventually a tour DVD of the next tour... I wouldn't expect any "requests" from petitions to come out, if at all, within the next three years.

useless idea I reckon. They'l release whats profitible when the time is right. Another ZooTV show shouldn't be a million miles off by my reckoning, or maybe something really early. We've also never had any official early releases, UF footage or LoveTown fotage so theres no shortage of possible material to release so who knows?.... . . . .. . but only if it's profitible

Is this like a 'what to do when sending a petition'?

Release U2 3D on dvd/cd.
Or a previously unreleased Zoo TV/Popmart show IMO.

Not entirely sure whether this was needed in that I think you covered this topic pretty well on the Principle Management topic, Jeff m'man, BUT I hear what you say and agree - not any sense in making any petitions for anything with all the material due for release
BUT

You have no idea how much I agree lol - a genuine ZooTV show on DVD without any Zooropa influences would make my day, not to mention WGRYWH finally immortalised on film.

I do not know, there's so much the thing to ask ...
My wish today would see some material from the show in Milan, the show filmed by the Dreamchaser at Croke Park in 2005 and a combo DVD + CD U2 3D.
A new show of ZOO TV on DVD must be possible in the remastering of Achtung Baby.
Whatever the material chosen for this petition I will support.

I wrote the initial PETITION or NOT post after I got a few PM's from a few people asking "How was the petition for Slane done".
So instead of multiple PMs, I thought I'd answer how one would go about it but also point out the reality... that even if you had a good request of a particular item... and got a respectable amount of signatures... with the influx of material coming out over the next 6 months - chances are slim that any "archive" footage (audio/video) would be released.
More often than not, there IS a method to my madness.
