Sooooooooooooooo...
I know that there are a lot of young people on these forums. I am only 26 myself. But I wanna hear from the older crowd, preferably from the older crowd who have be a fan of U2's for a while. Someone posted earlier in the "new u2 album" post about anticipation.. has is been this big before?
I wanna open a thread pertaining to the previous albums anticipation. How does this album rank with lets say HTDATB and ATYCLB? POP etc..??

The hype for AB was massive. That's the first one I clearly remember. Turned out ok.... 
let's hope for the same this time...
I do think the Internet etc leads to a different type of frenzied anticipation. You never got this in the 90's.

I think the 1980's and 1990's was a different type of anticipation. Better in some ways as there was not as much information out there as to the day to day activities of the band. No E-mail, no U2 start, no atu2.com with up to date news...
So yeah... after the Love Town tour ended... it was almost like they'd disappeared for a bit... and boy did they dream it up again!

I remember R&H lead-up being massive when I was a kid. U2 had just come off the back of a monster tour, they had a movie coming out, and their previous work was the biggest rock album of the 80's. It just felt like all eyes were on R&H at the time.
I remember AB being not so much anticipation but just total and utter shock with what they came out with when The Fly was released. I remember thinking "Is that really Bono? Holy shit, it is!!" And then AB exploded.
Certainly in the 'news as it happens' world we live in right now, nothing has beaten the hype around this one in the online community. I don't remember Bomb being this keenly anticipated.

I think ATYCLB and even Pop (certain parts I do remember, but not all the way back to Achtung Baby / Zooropa) were hyped even more than HTDAAB.

I remember the day before AB was released, West Ham United played the Red Shite @ Upton Park on the ITV,(before footie moved to Sky) and the whole of one side of the ground was advertising the release of the album.Plus Radio 1 had a U2 day,every 5th song was a U2 song,great supporters of the band in them days.Now it appears to be Radio 2 ie Twickenham......
For my money,Rattle & Hum was the most keenly anticipated release.Off the back of The Joshua Tree the wonder of how they could produce anything of that standard again was just like bring it on guys........plus Zooropa.I couldn't wait to get my hands on that (released 15 years ago tomorrow BTW).When I first played that and the opening track kicked in,wholly shit......Rattle & Hum was to The Joshua Tree as Zooropa was to Achtung Baby,just great extensions of great periods in the bands work IMHO.
The first listen of any new material is greatly anticipated,but I totally agree with Dan.The Internet has killed it.When was the last time you stood by a radio at certain time 'cos the DJ said....."...next the World Exclusive of the new U2 single" ? For Vertigo,it was around 8.20 am on a Friday in September 2004.OK so with the Internet get yourself tuned into a radio station in Australia,11 hours ahead of UK time,bang there you go.I remember listening to some breakfast show on a Sydney radio station waitng for 'em to play it.Within about an hour,it was up on torrent sites galore to download.So the idea of going into work late because you wanted to tape it off the radio dissapeared.It was on my mp3 player,and I was listening to it on the way to work.Oh how times have changed..........

god i'd have loved to have been old enough in the run up to Achtung. Could you imagine still being addicted to JT then hearing thos Salome working tapes?? I bet there were a few raised eyebrows. . . . .turned out ok

I remember the post-R&H era and a lot of people (fans including myself) were really burnt out on U2. As others stated before this was the pre-internet days so you were lucky if you could find something to read something about the new album in a magazine.
I found out about AB when I went to the record store and they were playing "The Fly". It totally blew me away and I was back on board with them again.
When POP was released the internet was still in it's infancy. I wasn't online yet so it was up to the big "New Releases" sign at Tower Records to tell us when it was coming out. I think that they released it at midnight and if I remember correctly there was a pretty good size crowd there.
I think for the new album I'm anticipating it but at the same time I'm holding my breath that it's not a toad.

I would have loved to have been around during the pre-AB months, like everyone's said - you have been blown away by JT and R&H, and then along comes this new album which tears that all up and sets fire to the proverbial touch paper all over again. The only album run-up I can clearly remember was HTDAAB, and that was something; I was only just getting into U2 for proper when ATYCLB turned up

well. this is my first anticipation album. i got to see them in tampa in nov 05 and have been a fan since. the energy of the band is like no other i have seen, and they are in their 40s. linkin park was good but they cant touch u2. the opening act for linkin park was my chemical romance and i do have to say that the lead singer of that band has got energy equivilant to bono's early days. i can see them going far if they stick together.
the thing i was thinking about earlier today after reading the post about nelson mandela's birthday video by bono and edge is this..
the music is above all else in u2. we all know that bono's voice is magical when he's on but look at some of the popmart shows. his voice was not on par at all. but the music that u2 brought to the table and the incredible stage was amazing!
with today's technology and eno and lanois working with u2 i can definately see a HUGE up coming tour. i'm really looking forward to some out of the box, inovated music from the boys. we know they are more than capable of it.
