Many of the great bands of our times had substandard follow-ups to their debut albums. So U2 aren't alone here. I think its the pressure of replicating the success of an amazing first-up effort.

I think it's missing the lyrics the month before recording.

I think it's both the pressure and the stolen lyrics..

I'm hearing you there. When Bono takes the stage he gets into character as the 'consummate showman'. It's the live facade behind the real Bono. Vertigo more than all other tours blurred the line between "showman" and "extra-curricular Bono" if you take my meaning.

Stolen? I never believed that history. Bono surely lost them and, in order to save his ass from a very hard kick of Paul McGuiness, said "I've been stolen...".

''from 2 beautiful girls''

The only thing on those pages were games of hangman and X's and O's. Stolen my beautiful girls my arse. . .

(although he did say the ladies returned the brief case years later)

Don't believe what you hear, don't believe what you see...
Acrobat lyrics were a hidding message from Bono, telling us not to believe the October lyrics bullshit

Sure the One speech was too long. I have it memorized by now, but it did actually do good. I posted on another topic how I admire U2 for having a little practice with their preach, and in this case it signed up millions of people for the One campaign. That's a good thing. People need to be forced to face the truth sometimes when they can't turn away. And if it means interupting a U2 show for five minues, I'm ok with it. One has mobilzed many people who would never signed up without Bono's prodding.

Guys at the end of the day there should be more people like Bono. Those special celebrities willing and able to speak out about what is unacceptably wrong in the world. If every celebrity followed suit during their spare time instead of crashing into trees when they were drunk or getting arrested for drug possession or ochestrating their own papparrazi entourage the world would be a lot more socially conscience and informative. As Bono asserts, celebrity is currency and he's using for greater good, not to his own advantage. It's part of who he is and what U2 is so let's respect his wishes. It's not as if this has been an overnight phenomenon.
