1. No 1 in 33 countries across the world, 3 big hit singles (Vertigo, SYCMIOY, COBL) plus others that charted (ABOY, OOTS). 8 Grammies (I think, at last count anyway!). A track like Miracle Drug is meaningful and touching. Love and Piece (or Else) is amazingly sonic and powerful. One Step Closer is beautiful. Why does this album get a raw deal by alot of fans in this forum? If NLOTH was half as succesful as this album, then I for one think U2's future would be very rosey. As it is, lack of hit singles and subsequent airplay of NLOTH has meant that HTDAAB may have been U2's last mega selling album.
  2. The parts are greater than the sum of the parts. If you understand. Agreed that there are some cracking tracks on the album, but as a whole they fail to deliver.
  3. I think in North America it is (or at least WAS) overrated. It won the Grammy for album of the year for 2005! It was a decent album but ... I suppose it seems strange that it would win when Achtung Baby or ATYCLB did not.

I think we "U2starters" are a bit critical of it. It has some very good tracks (namely the singles) and Yahweh was great live but it did have a bit of "filler."
  4. No.

(answer to the topic's title question)
  5. No, but I read on this site that it HTDAAB won more grammys than MJ's Thriller. That is really really strange

  6. It all depends, two great albums on the same year might mean that one of them never get the awards it deserved. But a crappy album released in a very weak year... HTDAAB.

    Grammies are shit anyway.
  7. Its a great rock album, like Who's Next or The Eagles Hotel California. It fits right in with the back to basics rock of the early 2000s (White Stripes, Strokes, Jet, etc.) IMO, its a toss-up between Atomic Bomb, War and ATYCLB as their third best album. RIght now, I'm leaning ATYCLB, but HTDAAB is a solid rock album. Lyrically, it is not as strong as UF, JT, the 90s stuff and NLOTH, but musically its up there with their best work.

I would make two changes to the album: (1) I think they should have added "Fast Cars," "Are You Gonna Wait Forever?" and "Mercy" to the album. Maybe they will do so when they re-release it AND (2) they should have gone with the original title, HANOVER QUAY -- less pretentious and more reflective of the roots rock feel of the album.

People on this forum who bash the albums of this decade are not very big U2 fans.

    Yeah your right.
About HTDAAB, I think it has some good songs, but the only songs i have on my ipod nowdays are Sometimes, One Step Closer, Miracle Drug and Mercy ( I know thats not really on HTDAAB) And that is not much.
  9. NO, it's way overrated
  10. Overrated by the public, underrated by the fans.
  11. I personally feel it's underrated. The album has some really good songs. first of all COBL is an amazing song,it rocks live and for me it is in the same level has WTHNN,and other golden hits of u2. Other great songs are 'Mircale Drug','Vertigo','Crumbs', actually the album has no weak songs (apart from a man and a woman). It's a great rock album.
