1. Asked this over at the atu2 forums and got crucified for it. Being the sucker for punishment that I am, I am going to ask the same thing of you guys.

Why does everyone love UTEOTW so much? I wasn't even aware it was a popular song until the Best Of 1990-2000 came out and it was on there. I was like "what?" (remember I had never been to a live concert or seen any of the DVDs at the time so didn't know it was a concert mainstay).

I find it to be a very flat, uninteresting song, and almost always skipped it while listening to Achtung Baby. And yet, at the Toronto show last year I attended, with an extremely apathetic crowd to non-singles, people lost their sh** to this song. I just don't get it.

I am NOT trying to troll here. I am authentically wondering what it is about this song that so many of you love. I want to like it more, considering how everyone else seems to adore it, but I just...don't.

Does anybody else agree with me? If not, what about the song makes you love it?
  2. The intro and the outtro is pure amazingness.
  3. I will agree with you on the intro and outro. The body of the song, though, does nothing for me.

I think I fail to connect to the song because of the subject matter.

  4. That and the lyrics/subject matter are both brilliant. AND the song just plain rocks.
  5. Man the song kicks ass,,,i love the lyrics about judas and i think the best live bits are from the zoo tv era ......Is this rock n roll,,,,is this rock n roll....
  6. It's one of the few U2 songs that's just pure, no-limits rock. I was underwhelmed like you too at first when I initialy heard the album version, but ever since hearing/seeing it live, it's taken on a completely different meaning. Like everyone's said, great build-up, and great space at the end for Edge to just go insane. I don't think Edge would be able to do that on something like Vertigo or Elevation.

You fail to connect with the song because of the subject matter? I take it you're an atheist. However, it's subject matter is just the same as any other song - it's just telling a story. I think if you didn't know it was about Judas and Jesus, and you also didn't know about the story of Jesus, the last supper, Judas's betrayal and the crucifixion, the lyrics in the song could play out like any betrayal from a person you love.

Completely away from the lyrics, it's top 3 in my rocking U2 tracks. Listen to Kiel from second leg of Zoo TV tour ("Turn up the fucking guitar Joe, guitar Joe, guitar Joe!!!". Edge just seems to connect like never before and the song went from good to bloody amazing.

Out of interest, what are your top 3 all time U2 songs?
  8. My Top 3?

It fluctuates, but usually contains Lemon, Cedars Of Lebanon, The Unforgettable Fire, No Line On The Horizon, Moment Of Surrender, The Fly, or Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses.
  9. i guess for a non-believer the lyrics could be somewhat hard to put up with.
for me they are pure gold. The bitterness of the last line and the kick of Edge's guitar afterwards is one of the best music moments U2 anyone has ever created .
  10. I'm not an atheist. I'm more of an agnostic. I doubt the divinity of Jesus and view most of the Bible as highly suspect. It was compiled by Catholic bishops with an agenda. Some of it was fabricated to fit the agenda.

I believe in an intelligent creator of the universe but am unsure of whether it's the Christian God I believe in or what.

Regardless, I've heard the Jesus/Judas story so many times it no longer has any impact on me. I understand the message of betrayal and forgiveness, but the song doesn't resonate with me.
  11. amazing subject matter and my favorite U2 solo to play. Awesome song all around!!!
  12. to be honest i dont think the body of the song is that great either. I just think the idea behind that song is awesome. Plus the live performance are truly amazing. I would have never thought they would come up with anything cooler than the Elevation tour's bull fighting but the whole bridge thing on the recent tour gives it the middle finger
