I have listened to it a lot and yes i believe it's a very good song, as u2spear said, but i just don't think it's the best song ever

  2. Like a rolling stone - Bob Dylan

  3. +2

For once I agree with you, the beginning is slow and mostly boring, the middle rock section is good and the solo is sublime.

But the whole song isn't consistently amazing like say WOWY where even the beginning is interesting. And the way Plant sings those first 'oohs' is cringeworthy.

That being said it probably should be in a best songs of all time list if just for the influence it has.

As for me, most of the big ones have been said, but some others to throw into the mix:

Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac (also Gypsy)
    1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
    Clocks - Coldplay
Sunday Morning or Sweet Jane- Velvet Underground
Climbing Up The Walls - Radiohead (way better than the predictable Karma Police)
Young Americans or Heroes - David Bowie
    Under Pressure - Queen/David Bowie
    Layla - Eric Clapton/Derek & the Dominos
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Don't Look Back in Anger - Oasis
Dancing in the Dark - Springsteen
    Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond
Rockin in the Free World - Neil Young
In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins
    Mr Brightside - The Killers
Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads
    Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
Can't Help Falling in Love - Elvis Presley
    Dancing Queen - ABBA
    Heart of Glass - Blondie
Every Breath You Take - The Police
Knockin on Heavens Door - Bob Dylan
    Redemption Song - Bob Marley
Hey Jude - The Beatles (cmon? No one has mentioned this yet!)
Daniel/Candle in the Wind - Elton John
Bridge over Troubled Water/Mrs Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel
She Loves You - The Beatles
I Am the Walrus - The Beatles
    Yesterday - The Beatles
All You Need is Love - The Beatles
    Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Blowin in the Wind - Bob Dylan
Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed
Cryin / Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison
    My Way - Frank Sinatra
  4. Like a Rolling Stone needs to be up there along with Sympathy for the Devil. Stairway is overrated IMO but INDEED in the top 5.
  5. How about Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen?
A masterpiece (although I prefer Thunder Road)
  6. Time-Pink Floyd
  7. Refugee-Tom Petty &The Heartbreakers
    Kashmir-Led Zep
    Alive-Pearl Jam
    Heroes-David Bowie
    Rebel Yell-Billy Idol
Cinnamon Girl-Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Thats just off the top of my head.
  8. A Day in the Life- The Beatles

It is the perfect marriage of John and Paul's styles. John's verses are dreamy and pschedelic while Paul's are more hurried and melodic. Add in the symphonic freak out in the end and lyrics that may be profound or just things John read in the morning paper. I was glad to see Rolling Stone pick it as #1 a few months ago when they published their list of the 100 greatest Beatles songs.

  10. Yeah Stairway isn't the greatest. I'm not going to get into the whole opinion debate BECAUSE I KNOW HOW MUCH YOU ALL LOVE THAT...

But really, it's structured pefectly, the lyrics are great, the melodies are great, yadda yadda. But it doesn't stand out as the greatest song for me. It's not even the greatest Zeppelin song in my opinion.
  11. I'll try this one but I must limit myself to only three U2 and three Radiohead songs in my top 20 list otherwise they'd occupy the entire list. I'm that boring.

    1. Where the Streets Have No Name - U2
    2. Paranoid Android - Radiohead
    3. Live Forever - Oasis
    4. One - U2
    5. Today - Smashing Pumpkins
    6. Temptation (1987) - New Order
    7. 1979 - Smashing Pumpkins
    8. Street Spirit - Radiohead
    9. Everlong - Foo Fighters
    10. Slide Away - Oasis
    11. With or WIthout You - U2
    12. The Drugs Don`t Work - TheVerve
    13. Common People - Pulp
    14. All Apologies - NIrvana
    15. Let Down - Radiohead
    16. Stand By Me - Oasis
    17. Like Suicide - Soundgarden
    18. Sweet Child O`Mine - GNR
    19. Corduroy - Pearl Jam
    20. Disarm - Smashing Pumpkins

My list is very late-80`s and 90`s - when `popular/rock" music had it's greatest influence on me. I have a lot of respect for 60's/70's stuff...top 5 are:

    1. A Day in The Life - The Beatles
    2. Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones
    3. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin (they have so many other great ones but I agree those who say it's their best)
    4. Sweet Jane - The Velvet Underground
    5. God Save the Queen - The Sex Pistols
