File under politics/opinion: MA NUTRITION LAW TO HEAD TO CITIES AND TOWNS
taken from my tumblr account
"I understand my home state (MA) is trying to curb obesity by limiting what children can bring to school for lunch, but it’s starting to become ridiculous. There’s a ban on bake sales as of August this year. I get it Massachusetts, you and your food police propaganda want rates to decline among overweight and obese children. What about funding for school programs though? Where will that funding come from, now that bake sales during school hours AND during sporting events are soon to be illegal. This means cutting school programs or increasing taxes will take place in order to keep those programs alive if they can’t get funding by other means. I also wonder if this law affects public universities. If so, I know a lot of school clubs that may be in jeopardy.
An amendment to the law was made so cities and towns can vote on whether to apply the law to their respective area or not. This law was amended by the Mass Legislature and the Senate, and is expected to be signed by Gov. Deval Patrick. Instead of leaving it up to cities and towns, wouldn’t it make more sense to repeal it instead? Keep the government out of children’s lunchboxes, because that job belongs to the parents, not the “nanny” state." -

The schools should have good food... what the students themselves have is not their business. The schools could educate their students on the issue to hopefully enable students able to make good decisions themselves, -
Thats the responsibility of parents. -

Despite what you think, they often can. The parents can't be expected to have all the knowledge, pedagogical ability and all that stuff to teach a child everything it needs to know. I think that is why schools were invented.
Parents can just be bad parents and examples too. -
I wish we'd had a post bookmark feature. I would bookmark ^ that post as one of my favorite replies in this topic ever. -
