Yeah, I always prefer ranking them in tiers
Don't agree on the order, but that's part of the beauty of music overall, and about U2's catalog in particular.

What's your opinion on your 4th tier though? do you still like those or do you try to avoid them?

Hard to pick. My top 5 or 6 alternate a bit, but I love them all.

This is hard to do, they're all great. But after the tour and changing it up a bit:

    Always love:
    Zooropa
    UF
    SOI
    JT
    POP
    AB
Always enjoy, but not quite perfect:
    No Line
    HTDAAB
    Boy
    ATYCLB
    R&H
    War

If I count Passengers It'd probably go in between SoI and Boy.

    A year later I'm feeling:

    1. JT
    2. AB
    3. UF
    4. SOI
    5. Pop

    13. HTDAAB

I'm looking forward to trying to put another album in here somewhere. Any day now I'm sure...

Recently, I've been rediscovering NLOTH, so I'm bumping ATYCLB to 3rd on my list. SOI has pretty much cemented itself as one of U2's finest works in my mind.

    Songs Of Innocence
    No Line On The Horizon
All That You Can't Leave Behind
    Achtung Baby
    Pop
    Joshua Tree
    Rattle And Hum

    Achtung Baby
    Zooropa
    Pop
    The Joshua Tree
    The Unforgettable Fire
    Songs of Innocence
    No Line On The Horizon
    (Original Soundtracks 1)

    WAR
    BOY
    ZOOROPA
    R&H
    POP
    NLOTH
    OCTOBER
    HTDAAB
    ATYCLB

Mind you, they're all good albums!
  8. Maybe TUF before SOI - actually, definitely so. Still, SOI comes close enough.
  9. Achtung Baby
    Joshua Tree
    The Unforgettable Fire
    Zooropa
    War
    Boy
    Pop
    Songs of Innocence
All That You Can't Leave Behind
How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

    Rattle and Hum

    No Line On The Horizon

JT and AB switch on the daily though.

Hi, basicly just like you I enjoy listening to SoI for example but I wouldn't reckon that as a great album. Mosly I play a couple of songs from Zooropa but rarely the whole album. There's only one album that I rarely listen to and that is NLOTH. Mostly I play the live versions of Breathe and Moment of Surrender on my iPod.
  11. I'm really impressed/pleased by the generally high rankings of Songs of Innocence, even after over a year on. It seems like for most of us it's in the top half of our album ranks, and for a lot of us is one of the top 4 or 5. I wonder, have our general opinions of it improved in the time since it's been released? I seem to remember a bit more resistance/criticism of it when it was only a couple of weeks/months old

yep, it's nice to see it in the top half (not an easy achievement).

I liked it at first, but it has grown a lot for me. At first it was "well, it's not great, but it doesn't have anything really awkward/bad/embarrassing neither". But it slowly improved as I kept listening to it and I didn't get tired of it... some songs became highlights (CR, Volcano, Troubles, RMN, SLABT...) and some remained acceptable.
But after the tour, even the weakest links in the album for me, became very decent or even managed to become highlights, like Miracle, Iris and SFS...

I honestly believe that this is one of their best works. I don't see it going down because of "time". Hopefully because of future releases, though.
