1. Hopefully you remember the idea from before the site crashed..basically, someone suggests a top 5 list for everyone to make/argue about and then once its run its course, someone just jumps in and suggests a new list. We had been doing album openers before the crash, but lets get a fresh start with a new topic (if you missed album openers, go ahead and make a list if you'd like, we can still discuss it)

Top 5 Bands that Define a Sound

    1. Talking Heads (New Age)
    2. Led Zeppelin (Classic Rock)
    3. Green Day (90s Alt. Rock)
    4. Pearl Jam (Grunge)
    5. Cream (Blues Rock)

Sort of off the top of my head. We can definitely debate this one. Just a band that defines their genre more than any other band within that genre. Lets goooooooooo
  2. 1. The Smiths (indie pop)
    2. Duran Duran (new romantic)
    3. Bahaus (gothic rock)
    4. Nirvana (grunge)
    5. Guns N' Roses (hard rock)

    as for album openers -

    1. I Wanna Be Adored (The Stone Roses - S/T)
    2. Plainsong (The Cure - Disintegration)
    3. Welcome to the Jungle (Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction)
    4. What's the Frequency, Kenneth? (R.E.M. - Monster)
    5. By The Way (Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way)
  3. Concept albums
    1. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
    2. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
    3. Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
    4. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
    5. Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto

Edit: Sorry if i wasn't allowed to post that (for the subject was 'bands that define a sound'). I would suggest Depeche Mode for either new wave, synthpop or new romantic and Elvis Presley for rock and roll.
  4. Album Closers:
    1. A Day in the Life (The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band)
    2. Jungleland (Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run)
    3. Ambulance Blues (Neil Young - On the Beach)
    4. Street Spirit (Radiohead - The Bends)
    5. Tomorrow Never Knows (The Beatles - Revolver)
  5. The idea of the thread is more to elaborate on one list for awhile before just posting your own random lists...sort of more of a round-table discussion thread where we debate and share opinions on one specific topic before gradually moving on.

Does someone want to pick one of the lists stared above me here and sort of voice opinions, give reasons, etc..?
  6. I'd like to take Dan's list, album openers, since I had prepared my list before the crash

Really good list, I agree that four of the five are good, if not strong openers. My only disagreement lies in Plainsong really. As you'll see below though, we certainly agree on Welcome to the Jungle.

    Here's my list (I think):

    1. Born in the U.S.A. (Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A.)
    2. Wouldn't It Be Nice (The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds)
    3. London Calling (The Clash, London Calling)
    4. Welcome to the Jungle (Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction)
    5. Runaway (Bon Jovi - Bon Jovi)

    My opinion:

    1. Depeche Mode or Joy Division
    2. Amen.
    3. Oasis
    4. Nirvana
    5. Amen.

4th position should be a tie between Nirvana, Pearl Jam and the Chilis I reckon.
  8. I don't know if i'd put a "grunge" label on the RHCP - they are from the same era and in the "alternative" style that many early 1990's rock bands were classified as but they were much more funky than PJ or Nirvana. Not too many non-Seattle based bands get the grunge label from me - maybe The Pumpkins and STP.
  9. I would label RHCP in the same vein as Smashing Pumpkins or even Green Day- that 90s tinny alternative sound that broke out around grunge at that time.
  10. Album Openers:
    1. Streets
    2. Airbag - Radiohead's OK Computer
    3. Rock N Roll Star - Oasis's Definitely Maybe
    4. Go - Pearl Jam's Vs.
    5. Welcome to the Jungle - GNR's Appetite for Destruction

    Album Closers
    1. Street Spirit - Radiohead's The Bends
    2. All I Want Is You
    3. Champagne Supernova - Oasis's (What's the Story) Morning Glory
    4. Love Is Blindness
    5. Indifference - Pearl Jam's Vs.
  11. Sound definers:
    1. Grunge - Nirvana (sorry PJ)
    2. Gangster (or is it Gangsta?) Rap - Ice T
    3. Southern Rock - Lynyrd Skynyrd
    4. Industrial - Nine Inch Nails (or Ministry)
    5. Brit Pop - Oasis (they ALWAYS beat Blur)
  12. I would say Ministry (along with groups like Kraftwerk) brought it around, but NIN definitely defines industrial.
