1. I'm kinda with you on that. I think people are going way over the top criticising this new version. For me it doesn't beat the original but it can hardly be classed as terrible considering all the big parts are from 1987 and the verses are sang well enough. I understand people are saying why attempt it when it's not better than the original but the original is not going anywhere, when people buy or listen to the Joshua tree it's still going to be 1987 RHMT, this is just another version and a chance to promote the song which otherwise would be difficult without a single release. I think that's the key here, it's not a money making thing or anything the band just want to promote the song and can't exactly bring out the full on 1987 version as a 'new single' so this was the compromise.

  2. Was able to hold it today. My record store has 13 copies.
  3. They shouldve put the original version on the B side

    what remix is this?
  5. after listening a couple times, I like it but the transition to 2017 to 1987 bothers me
  6. The biggest issue I have with this "re-mix" is that some of it is a new recording and some of it is the original. They don't sound good together. This is why I think it sounds so uninspired, as if there's a bit of laziness about the whole thing.

I get that they need some kind of release to promote the new tour (actually, they don't, but that's another debate altogether). Why not just re-record the entire song? Or better yet, hunker down in the studio, practice playing the album all the way through, and release a "The Joshua Tree: Live In Studio" album. I'd have been happier with a newly packaged CD/DVD/BluRay release of a concert from the original Joshua Tree tour in 1987. Wouldn't you run out and buy one of those releases sooner than the new deluxe reissues?

Any of those would have been a more inspired choice than this re-mix, and shown more effort on the part of the band and their management/record company.

You make some good points but what I'd say is this release is not being used to promote the tour but to promote the song. I think the fact it is the single that never was and never been played live makes it a bit of a centre piece and they have to give it some promotion. The tour itself needs no promotion. I really hate the idea of a Joshua tree live in studio idea but i like the idea of a 1987 cd and DVD combo instead of what we're getting for the 30th anniversary release, that's why I'm only buying the 2cd version with the MSG gig. However that still wouldn't make the point of promoting this particular song which I think is what there trying to achieve. Also to go back to the first point I think they just realised that Bono could not match or better his 87 vocals so decided just verses which as I mentioned before was the compromise which would allow this to be brought out as a 'new' single.
