Day 1 rehearsals in Laval: 9 April 2018

With thanks to U2Songs, who have contacts in the area, we know that Bono and Edge have joined Adam and Larry in Laval, Quebec, for tour rehearsals. Four songs were done yesterday, possibly by the crew, and they can be found below the jump.

  • The Fly (riffs)
  • Until the End of the World
  • Acrobat
  • Lights of Home

One song on that list immediately jumps out to our attention, and that is quite obviously The Fly. It was last performed in full on 30 July 2011 in Moncton on the closing date of the U2 360° Tour. On the iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour a previously unreleased mix, consisting of the music from Gavin Friday's cover with new vocals by Bono, replaced The Wanderer as the Intermission from 26 July 2015 onwards. With the exception of the two dates in Glasgow on 6 and 7 November, all of those instances were taped. At those two shows however, Bono sang the vocals live, and the latter performance was included on the tour's video release. If The Fly is being considered for the set it would suggest that the Intermission will either require a new song, or be done away with altogether.

Less surprising is Until the End of the World. The song has been a staple of U2 tours since debuting on ZooTV, with its only notable absence before last year's Joshua Tree celebration being large portions of the Vertigo Tour. On i+e it arguably served as the capstone on the "innocence" portion of the show, so the placement and thematic presentation will likely be changed. Lights of Home is also unsurprising to see rehearsed.

We will be sure to keep you updated on any further spoilers that may occur during rehearsals. Reports suggest that the band will forego practice on Friday and take in Canada's sport on the other rink in the building, and-

Oh, did I miss one? How silly of me.

Yes, Acrobat was apparently rehearsed. Do I need to say more? The song has never been performed live. Audio recordings of the song (along with a full band version of So Cruel) exist from the ZooTV rehearsals in Hershey on 6 August 1992. These recordings show an abbreviated version of the song being worked on acoustically by Bono and Edge before leading directly into the introduction of Zoo Station, suggesting that the band once considered it as a possible opener. Of the songs U2 have never performed live, it is certainly one of the two most requested by fans alongside Drowning Man. Though to be a killjoy, we remind you all that rehearsals often lead to dropped songs (as Drowning Man itself can attest).
