Edge and 5 Seconds of Summer in March

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2020-02-25)

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) are releasing a new album called CALM and they have revealed that the album will feature contributions by The Edge and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine. The album is being released on March 27, 2020. The band worked with Ryan Tedder on a number of tracks on the album. Tedder has worked on U2’s most recent albums Songs of Experience and Songs of Innocence.

5 Seconds of Summer are signed to Interscope Records. Their newest single from the new album, “Old Me” was released on February 21. It is however, not the song featuring The Edge, the title of which has yet to be revealed. Four tracks have been released to date and none of the tracks released credit The Edge. The Edge is also not credited as a composer on any of the remaining tracks in the song credits listed on iTunes.

However in an article by Kathy McCabe in the Daily Telegraph in Australia, it was revealed last week that The Edge and Tom Morello are playing on the album but no details beyond that are mentioned in the article. “They may have struggled to be taken seriously by the wider music industry as musicians and songwriters as teenagers but they are now young men working with the biggest names in contemporary pop music.”

The band formed as teenagers in Australia in 2011, and are known for their hit “Youngblood.” The album title, CALM is an amalgamation of their names, Calum, Ashton, Luke and Michael.

The album will feature songs “Red Desert,” “No Shame,” “Old Me,” “Easier,” “Teeth,” “Not in the Same Way,” “Lover of Mine,” “Thin White Lies,” “Lonely Heart,” “High,” “Best Years,” and “Wildflower.” “Teeth” and “Easier” have previously been released as singles. The song “Teeth” includes the credit for Tom Morello, listed as guitar, and also includes Ryan Tedder on backing vocals. That song also features a sample of New Order’s “Blue Monday.”

A trailer for the new album has been posted to YouTube which features snippets of a number of songs.

Although the Edge has worked on many solo projects over the years, the last new songs that were released with Edge as a solo artist were the songs he composed with Paul Chavez for the performance Cold Dream Colour in 2012.
