U2 and Elton John together on “AngelHeaded Hipster” Album

Original Story by Aaron J. Sams (2020-04-27)

U2 will appear on the new album AngelHeaded Hipster which celebrates the music of T. Rex and Marc Bolan. U2 will be contributing a cover of “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” and Elton John will be featuring on the track on piano. Trombone Shorty was also present at the recording sessions for the track back in September 2017 in New Orleans. Although he didn’t play on the original recording of the song, Elton John famously sat in on the piano when the song was performed for Top of the Pops, and has long been associated with the song.

The album is being released September 4, 2020. Initial listings online had shown a release date of July 31, 2020. U2 join other artists including Gavin Friday, Lucinda Williams, Julian Lennon, Nick Cave and Joan Jett covering songs written by Marc Bolan. The album was originally planned to celebrate what would have been Marc Bolan’s 70th birthday, but has been delayed several times since the originally planned 2017 release date. The album was compiled and developed by longtime U2 collaborator, Hal Willner, who recently passed away from the COVID-19 virus.

An accompanying documentary The Children of the Revolution was also planned featuring the recording of the songs on the tribute album. It is not known at this time if that documentary will be debuted soon.

More information about this release including track listing, and information about the recording sessions can be found in our U2 discography entry. AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T.Rex will be released July 31. A special limited white vinyl pressing of the album will be sold, there will be a regular black vinyl pressing, and there will be a 2-CD edition.
