Performance

A very workmanlike performance from the boys in this the fourth leg of their biggest tour. And heirin lies my major problem with this boot. It was too routine. The band played a very good setlist with great proficiency (the Edge, in particular, was spot on) but there was no gusto or brilliance to it I felt. I got the impression that they were a little too comfortable here, choosing not to take it to another level and really turn it on for the fans.

To be fair, I cannot overlook a few attempts to mix it up a little and throw out a few surprises which should be commended. Larry's Dirty Old Town was a good bit of fun and My Girl provided interesting variation in a great spot in the set. I should acknowledge that all the ZooTV stalwarts were played quite well, particularly the encore. McPhisto's Desire and Ultraviolet were perhaps the pick of the bunch. I always like hearing the shimmering Zoo intro of With Or Without You and can never understand why it was dropped on the last leg.

A minor complaint that I have is the setlist. Streets and Pride should have wrapped up the main set on every ZooTV show as they climax the energy extremely well. Still Haven't Found.... and Stand By Me don't belong here. They end on a rather soft note. Sorry. Push them up around Bad or something.

Highlights:
None really to speak of.

Lowlights:
None really to speak of.

Sound

Scratchy, rough, distant and muffled. The bass, in particular, was tragic. I haven't checked out the version in the bootleg section but this was definitely not 4 star. It's about on par with most 3 stars I've listened to. On top of that, there seemed to be fairly regular volume fluctuations and movements between speakers. I was a little disappointed to say the least. The only shining light - a very vocal audience whose voice was very well measured in the recording.
Recording: Audience microphone - 4 stars

Overall

The lack of highlights and lowlights says it all really. Just a very typical run of the mill ZooTV boot. And there was nothing really to distinguish itself. It was caught between the first legs and the onset of Zooropa. If you want a good genuine ZooTV show, check out the U.S. legs or a few 2nd leg European gigs like Globen. If you want a Zooropa mix, select some of the latter 4th leg shows like Dublin or London or the Australasia leg. This Verona show was in a bit of a time warp. I can only give this 6/10.
