Performance

The second show of the tour starts after an extended Pop Muzik intro. Mofo chugs along with the shuffle beat that doesn't allow much dynamism but still sounds funky, the band sound a little out of sync with each other at the start of I Will Follow, Edge's guitar also briefly cuts out and Bono improvises most of the vocals, certainly a forgettable performance anyway. As the band launch into EBTTRT, Bono announces that this is the first proper crowd after Las Vegas and official opening night of the tour. Do You Feel Loved is dedicated to Bono's daughters. A good band performance, but Bono still sounds a bit flat during the choruses.

Pride follows with Adam coming in a bit late, but only a few songs in, already the show is flowing much better than Las Vegas. Bono is also already sounding a lot more positive of how things are going as the band lead into ISHFWILF. Last Night On Earth starts tentatively, yet still a fairly strong effort from the band with Bono enjoying an extra few guitar thrashes. The band then launch into Gone, Bono putting in a good effort vocally. The song still has some way to go but is showing promise. UTEOTW rocks the crowd, IGWSHA is now a duet performance and a very brief snippet. Bono still continues to sing a verse of the song acapella and talks to the crowd before the band start Staring At The Sun, which is an improvement on the Vegas performance and but could do with Edge's guitar being a bit louder.

Ironic that Edge mentions "let's cut the crap" for the karaoke segment, because I hate to say, that's what this part of the show is. So let's head to Miami instead. Due to the IEM mix you hear Bono at the start talking to crew about "this needs rehearsing more" in reference to his head mic. Miami is already shaping into a show highlight and sounding tighter as a performance. It transitions effortlessly into a funked up version of BTBS that goes down well. Please is sung well, the Sunday Bloody Sunday drum riff dropping in during the song's middle eight section and at the end, which gets the crowd going as Bono does a call and response with "please" over and over until Edge's opening notes of WTSHNN chime in. The extended techno-fused outro ends the main set on a high.

Discotheque is an improvement after its disastrous debut in Vegas. Still a bit shaky, although it does have some extra guitar effects from Edge and morphs well into the Howie B mix. IYWTVD is omitted as the band probably needed more time to get it right, so go straight into With Or Without You. The song is extended towards the outro as if the band were unsure how to end it. HMTMKMKM is also a much stronger rendition than Vegas, Bono comes in a bit early on the second verse and corrects himself, possibly due to keyboard augmentation the band had to keep in time with. Later in the tour it will get rid off those backing strings and become much more loose and rocking. Mysterious Ways is another solid performance that goes down well with the crowd. One is a standard yet tight performance, a bit more brief than later versions but ends the show well.

Sound

A good quality recording of the time.
Recording: IEM - 3.5 stars

Audience

Some nice crowd participation throughout who also seem to appreciate the new material.

Overall

Even though it's only the second show of the tour after a very shaky start in Las Vegas, the band are more confident already, the songs sounding better and the show flowing more smoothly. Bono's voice is also sounding better which helps. After Las Vegas, they probably felt they had something to prove so put in a much tighter performance.

Yet that said, the band are still rehearsing Popmart in front of an audience and have some way to go. This is a show worth revisiting from the early part of the tour.
