2001-08-25 - Slane, Ireland - Slane Castle

setlist

Performance notes: This concert features the first performance of A Sort Of Homecoming since 27 June 1987 and it is somewhat shambolic, with Bono struggling to remember the lyrics. This show is the first time U2 has played Slane since opening for Thin Lizzy in 1981; in honour of Thin Lizzy, U2 play a brief cover of Dancing In The Moonlight.

Performance

I was just reading about this show and thought I'd download it. What has to remembered about this show is that it is the one that took place four days after the death of Bono's Dad. With that as the backdrop it was always going to be an emotional show and the band managed to pull out a tremendous performance.

Sound

Maybe not the best sound, a little bit low but it doesn't matter so much when you think that this recording captured a very special moment in the life of U2 and in particular Bono.

Audience

From all the reports I read about this show and listening to the bootleg one thing is clear the crowd picked Bono up and sang their hearts out for him.

Overall

It's hard to speak of lows when you consider the circumstances of the show. A lesser band probably would have canceled the show. The five stars are really because of the effort from band and fans alike who gave their all on what was a dark day.
