2010-09-03 - Athens, Greece - Olympic Stadium

setlist

Performance notes: U2 perform in Greece for the first time in approximately 13 years. This is only their second Greek concert ever, after a Popmart gig in Thessaloniki. At the end of Vertigo, Bono wore a pair of flashing devil horns handed to him by a member of the audience. This show features the 100th ever performance of Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me.

Performance

I don't really have a whole lot of comments to make on the band's performance, to be honest. Seeing as it was my first (and to date, only ) U2 gig, everything felt well-played. Listening again recently though, I saw that they completely botched Vertigo, which, while incredibly funny, is something I have no recollection of.

Sound

Not much to say here. The mix seems ok, there's nothing that really stands out as egregious or exemplary.
Recording: "Matrix " - 3.5 stars

Audience

Standing in the middle of the crowd some 50 meters from the edge of the Claw, I remember that there was a bit of a strange apathy among my fellow spectators. Sure, I could see others among those in attendance like myself, who sang along to every song until hoarse, but I feel as if the major fans were all within the Claw or otherwise quite close to the band. Bit of a weird feeling, and it's definitely something that I feel comes through on the recording (e.g. almost zero audience participation during Crazy Tonight, tepid participation during the hits)

Overall

Ok so as I mentioned in the band performance section, this was my first, and as of writing only, U2 gig, and it's been 12 years since the day, so there's not a whole lot that I can actually remember. My sister and I had booked arena tickets and we arrived just as Snow Patrol were closing their set (I think with their only hit of note, at least in Greece, Chasing Cars). From then on it was a bit of a rush to get as close to the Claw as we could, eventually stopping about 50 meters from its bottom right leg.
The band came on at around 21:15, preceded by David Bowie's Space Oddity and playing The Return of the Stingray Guitar. The whole show after that felt like a whirlwind with one hit after another being played, the songs blending into one-another. Mysterious Ways was great with Bono's ad-libs at the end, though It's a shame they didn't play the extended outro. Another stand-out for me was the extended Discotheque snippet during Crazy Tonight, complete with that classic riff from Edge. Walk On (one of my top 3 favorite songs early on in my fandom) was another highlight of the show, I remember tearing up while listening to it. A final highlight for me was HMTMKMKM, a favorite of mine from the Best of 1990-2000 which I didn't expect to ever hear live, and a bona-fide rocker that the lads really ought to consider returning to their setlists in future.
Overall a grand, almost surreal experience, a massive spectacle, a strong playlist (without the weaker tracks from NLOTH, though it's a shame they dropped Breathe as the show opener, and I was also hoping to hear EBTTRT), and a one-of-a-kind gig. Hopefully the lads will consider visiting Greece again on a forthcoming tour.

Standouts:
- Mysterious Ways
- Crazy Tonight/Discotheque
- Walk On
- HMTMKMKM

Negatives:
- Tepid audience participation
- Utterly botched Vertigo
- No Breathe
