Performance

The biggest band in the world and best live act are monikers long held by U2. Both are being put the test this spring and into summer. The much maligned iTunes drop of their last album, Songs of Innocence, is very much in the rearview mirror with all focus straight on the road. U2 is a band that ultimately is judged by their live show. From their beginnings in Larry Mullen's family kitchen through the world's biggest stadiums, U2 has wanted to be close to their audience even in the largest of venues. Even after lukewarm album releases, U2 concerts bring out euphoric levels of crowd energy and participation. In that is where the challenge lies in the band.
How do you meet the expectations of long time loyal fans and newcomers wanting to feel the reputation of U2 rapture? They again have reached this impossible bar with a mix of technology, staging, and presence to capture anyone in the building with their storytelling.
Here is an example of the technology:

U2 performing Cedarwood Road Phoenix, AZ

In the video, Bono is walking down the neighborhood road, he grew up singing about those times. U2 really brings a rock opera to this tour in the form of a three part set. The opening ten song barrage of new and old material is played at a frenzied pace to invoke U2's punk rock inspired youth infused with a very special song Bono sings in memory of his mother with the song "Iris". The second part of the night brings the audience through the U2 explosive years of the late 80's and early 90's.
The incredible two-sided screen is used to perfection throughout the performance to enhance any view one may have in the arena. The final act is the encore which includes "Where The Streets Have No Name", as in all previous tours, brings the house down.
It's all there this time around. Everything you've ever heard about a U2 show is there and they've found something new to add. The sound system is crystal clear with the speakers set all around the upper portion of the rigging. I've found my inspiration from U2 so many years ago and I'm amazed at their utter defiance to settle. They have just never relied on their past. Each release they put forth is then put to the test on the road. The new songs come alive with the classic anthems and poetic ballads that created the enormous fanatical base of followers. And, as Bono walked off stage stating "We still have things to do", we can still look forward to more. How can they reach the high bar they have set? I don't know, but they do time and time again. I have no doubt they will continue to do so until they have found what are looking for and only the four friends from Dublin know what that might entail. Peace.
