Performance

The progressive appearance of the band members and the choice of SBS and NYD to open made for a powerful start. Overall, however, I thought the band had a bit of first night nerves and there was clearly some fine tuning to be done with the set list and Bono's banter with the crowd. Despite extensive rehearsals they didn't hit the ground running.

Sound

Have been listening to this regularly and it's a very clear and listenable recording. The in-ear count ins are barely noticeable but I personally like this little quirk; it's like hearing the show from the band's perspective.
Recording: "30 years and I still can't play harmonica" - 4 stars

Audience

A disappointingly passive audience, who barely responded to Bono's attempt to start a singalong during ASOH. I noticed this most, perched up on high as Streets started, when I expected to see a heaving mass of people jumping and waving; but they pretty much stood still. Even the thrill of an unheard new song couldn't stop them from talking and taking it in. Very surprising.

Overall

To paraphrase Dickens - it was the best of gigs; it was the worst of gigs. There was lots to like - first night of a tour; the Joshua Tree in full, meaning RHMT had it's live debut, a brand new song and some rarities. Plus a jaw-dropping screen and some amazing visuals. But there were a number of problems too. The transition between album songs was clunky and forced; the band seemed very nervous, the sound reverberated around the stadium and the audience never really got into it. The encore of UV and MS was disappointing with the songs getting lost in the message. I'm glad I flew all the way for it, but it's memorable for competing reasons.
