I wasn't really sure what to expect in the run-up to his show... in a number of ways. It's not a greatest hits show by any means so I was worried the crowd would drift off during the second half of the Joshua Tree. Also, having watched videos of songs like Red Hill Mining Town and read people's reactions, there seemed to be a lot of mixed opinions. Also, I thought the Innocence and Experience tour was absolutely as good as U2 have ever been and I wasn't sure how this would compare. I need not have worried. It was a great gig.
The crowd was as lively as any I have seen for the big hits, which is more or less the first seven songs and the 00s hits in the encore. People really react to those songs and it's only in a live setting that I can always totally understand why U2 persist in playing Vertigo, Elevation and Beautiful Day.
The Joshua Tree from start to finish was, for a fan like me and many of those in Croke Park, a fantastic experience. The casual fan, there for the alcohol as much as for the music, started to drift in and out to the bar from Bullet onwards, which is fine with me. This was a moment for the fans. Red Hill Mining Town blew me away.... it was fantastic and Bono vocals were perfect. I never dreamed that I would have the opportunity to hear songs like Exit and Mothers live. Thanks boys!
Miss Sarajevo is a bit weird as an opener in the encore, especially with Bono not doing the operatic part anymore. Little Things seems to get a mixed reaction but it has a catchy chorus that is stuck in my head all day, which must be a good thing.
Only disappointment? Bad instead of A Sort of Homecoming. It's weird because Bad is my favourite song but I'd heard it before so was hoping for Homecoming. It was a really great performance of Bad though! Also, the sound was a bit scratchy at times (lower Cusack Stand) but that's more to do with Croke Park than U2. It's not the best venue for music, unfortunately.
Overall, it was a fantastic experience and well worth the fairly expensive tickets we bought. Hopefully, now that Pairc Ui Chaoimh has been redeveloped in my hometown of Cork, the next time I see them, I won't have to travel up to Dublin. Fingers crossed!

"The last one's gonna need an ambulance if he's not telling me the truth."
- Bono on stage during the first Rotterdam Lovetown show where several fans said they could play guitar for 'People Get Ready' but it turned out they couldn't.
did you know
The song 'Gone' is about Bono and his family, how he feels when on the road while touring and has to leave them behind and it also represents his past life.
