1981-06-09 - London, England - Hammersmith Palais

setlist

Performance notes: Second and last known live performance of Carry Me Home, a rough unreleased U2 original with lyrics consisting almost entirely of "carry me home". It was believed for years prior to 2010 that this was the sole performance of Carry Me Home. Bruce Springsteen and Pete Townshend both attended this gig and met with the band afterwards.

Performance

This was an early U2 show with all its good and bad sides. good, because they are young and energetic, each musician added all the best they could, and the atmosphere is really 'all over the place'. The problems starting with the songs they play. I'm not a big fan of the early U2, because no matter how energetic and brave these songs are, just becasue of this, they won't began to differ from each other. Especially in the 'Boy' and pre-October era. I cannot really tell the verse of 'I Fall Down' apart from the verse of 'Another Time/Another Place', these songs are too much like the other. Even they feel that 'some songs are better than others' - they play 'I Will Follow' twice, the band-audience communication is Ok, but most of the times, we get just the name of the next song.

Edge is fantastic, he runs like a locomotive, it's always great to hear that whatever Bono sings, Edge adds his own layer to it, his guitar can nearly talk like a human!

Ups:

I Will Follow: (even twice it kicks)
An Cat Dubh (loved the chorus part)
11'o Clock Tick Tock (Can they play it bad?)

Downs:

Fire (boooring)
Boy/Girl (boooring)

Sound

Great for '81, not really a 4-star level, but when compared to other bootlegs from this era, it can be 4.
