Performance

It’s a sort of homecoming for U2 with a Dublin festival gig. Bono is excited, although at points he does sound a bit tired. Edge’s vocals are quite audible, Adam slaps.

An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart is where the show really gets going. Both Surrender and Two Hearts feature Bono freestyling and/or snippeting something which isn’t listed. Steve Wickham, then the-soon-to-be fiddler for The Waterboys, fiddles on Sunday Bloody Sunday just as on the record. Bono is quite hard to hear on much of I Fall Down, which has the singalong ending. Happy Birthday is sung for Edge before Party Girl. Annie Lennox of Eurythmics sings on “40”.

Sound

Not outstanding, a bit muddy/tinny sounding. It’s not too shabby though. Unfortunately, Steve Wickham’s fiddling is a bit lost. Furthermore, The Electric Co., which also featured fiddling, appears to be left out, which is a real shame...
Recording: "Welcome Home" - 4 stars

Audience

They seem pretty eager... especially, unsurprisingly, whenever Bono mentions Dublin. They sing the Give Peace a Chance snippet in 11 O’Clock.

Overall

I wanted to give higher than 4 stars. There’s a lot to like about this show - several songs are performed very well, with a little extra given to them. On the other hand, the sound is a little underwhelming at many points and there are times between the special performances when it just feels like another War show. The band were getting a bit tired out, I think. On the whole the show is well worth a listen, but the absence of The Electric Co. in this source and the good-but-not-great sound hold it back a bit.

Highlights:
- Surrender
- Two Hearts Beat As One
- Sunday Bloody Sunday with fiddle
- New Year’s Day
- 11 O’clock Tick Tock
