Performance

Luckily, Bono is in great shape for U2's first appearance in Hamburg since 1981 and we kick things off with an INCREDIBLE performance of '11 O'Clock Tick Tock', featuring a stable falsetto, fantastic belts during the outro and a very energetic band. This continues into 'I Will Follow', where we also get a first glimpse of the awesome audience at this gig, making it really tough to understand why the band wouldn't return to this beautiful place until 2018.

To keep the energy flowing, the band goes straight into a very funky intro of 'Seconds' and another great performance ensues with BEASTLY belts by Bono among The Edge's great lead vocals and great harmonies. The show continues with a gorgeous 'MLK', typically leading into 'The Unforgettable Fire', which also sounds quite good tonight and I can happily confirm Bono's falsetto also works perfectly fine in this song. 'Wire' is great as well with lots of energy from everyone.

'Sunday Bloody Sunday' is elevated from the insane audience participation and sees Bono nailing the song through and through. He thanks the crowd for their efforts and introduces 'The Electric Co.' for "anyone who doesn't know" but everyone knows as they even sing along during the live-only track 'The Cry'! The main jam is superb with the band going all out and Bono adding some great snippets. We return to more TUF tracks with 'A Sort of Homecoming', before which Bono does a longer speech, thanking the crowd for their great reception and welcome in Germany. The song is performed extremely well with GREAT harmonies and fantastic lead vocals by Bono.

'Bad' is dedicated to the working girls of Hamburg and is a pretty solid rendition of the song with Bono neither sounding great nor particularly bad on the choruses. Outside of them, Bono even nails a few good belts. 'October' is your typical rendition. 'New Year's Day' is overall a solid performance but Bono gives out big time towards the end of the second verse. Nonetheless, 'Pride' is quite solid with Bono belting the choruses strongly. Surprisingly, this is not the end of the main set yet as the band plays Gloria as well; it's not the tightest rendition but full of energy, especially from the audience. Bono embellishes the finale very impressively.

The first encore starts off with a pretty good rendition of Party Girl, featuring more great participation by the audience and some fun additions by the band as usual. A really clean transition leads into Two Hearts Beat As One. Bono sounds great here and belts out some of the highes with lots of confidence! The outro is great (and long!!!) with more intense audience participation and the band going all out once more. 40 is absolutely GORGEOUS with lots of great additional musicianship, wonderful vocals by Bono and some great audience participation.

Sound

Pretty good AUD although it ran quite slow originally.
Recording: Audience microphone - 4 stars

Audience

Great and very enthusiastic audience. They start singing along frantically during 'I Will Follow' and nothing in this world could stop them from contributing about everything you could ask from an audience afterwards. This crazy bunch even sings along in the rarest tracks played tonight!

Overall

Overall, this is a surprisingly strong show for early 1985 standards! The band, pushed by an incredible audience, goes out during many songs, making for gorgeous moments like the intro of Bad or great jams in The Electric Co.. Bono sounds much stronger than expected and even some rough choruses in Bad can't take away much from what is otherwise a convincing performance. Definitely a show worth checking out for fans of The Unforgettable Fire album and its tour!
