My first U2 show - very exciting, great crowd. Bono had just spray painted a piece of artwork a few days prior during the "Free the Yuppies" show, and made mention of that and "Mayor Feinstein" throughout. Edge had guitar issues during ISHFWILF, a mural was created on stage by local young artists. I remember "Exit" being fantastic.
This part is only rated, not commented on Recording: Audience microphone - 4.5 stars
Crowd was loud and energetic despite it being somewhat cold.
Fun show, great audience, Bono talked a lot (even for Bono!). Bodeans and The Pretenders opened. Overall great first experience seeing U2.

This is a fresh transfer from the master PCM Beta tapes. Here is the history of
this recording. When U2 announced they were playing we planned on going Saturday
the 14th and had a friend rent us a pair of Schoeps mics from Gassar Sound in SF.
They asked him where his studio was located and he gave the address of his
protography studio since center field at the Oakland Coliseum would not have worked.
The mics cost $75 for the weekend and were due back Monday. We had help bringing
in about 60 lbs of gear and found our spot. The crowd during the opening act was
unruly. At one point I was kicked in the face by a chick in combat boots trying
to get through the crowd. We had to retreat and missed the opener. We went back
for U2 and got a recording but we realized after the show one of our cables was
bad due to the crazy crowd. Since tickets were cheap we decided to go back for
the second night. For this night we brought 2 big guys from Sweden who were
friends of a friend to help us. We also brought a mic stand and had our security
friend stand with us in uniform. The idea was if someone came to bust us he was
already doing that. We put the mics on the stand and set it at about 7 feet in
front of the soundboard. Since it was Sunday, the crowd was easier and we succeeded
in making the first digital U2 recording. The show was amazing and the sound was
really good. Given U2 is touring 27 years later this is a perfect time to post a
new transfer of the show.

"You've got to give people something they've never seen before. Or, more importantly, something they haven't felt before because in the end, for all this architecture and sci-fi stuff, if you don't feel the songs and the band, what's the point?"
- Bono on the 360 tour

Beautiful Day started out as a song called Always. It was released in 2000 on the single of the same name.
