1989-12-01 - Osaka, Japan - Osaka Castle Hall

setlist

Performance notes: This concert is often said to have somewhat of a "backwards setlist", due to the presence of songs normally played late in the set appearing in its early stages, such as Pride and New Year's Day, while the main set staple trio of Desire, All Along The Watchtower, and All I Want Is You is in the encore. Also noteworthy is the first performance of Slow Dancing in concert - nearly four years before its first official studio release! Bono had previously sung some of the song on Australian radio in October 1989.

Performance

Lovetown stands for a fast paced, energetic tour. We all know the Point Depot shows, but the shows before were something different. The band was on fire. Just listen to Gloria, Angel of Harlem featuring Suspicious Minds, One Tree Hill and all other songs.

Bono’s voice during this era (and this show) was something different. He reaches all the high notes and doesn’t skip words to make it easier on him. He gives all he can, but you can clearly hear it isn’t easy. The rest of the band were also excellent. Lovetown was definitely a peak for all band members. And the biggest tours were yet to come!

The setlist is not comparable to the set the band currently plays. Without songs like One, The Fly, Beautiful Day, there is room for songs like Slow Dancing, One Tree Hill, Gloria and All I Want Is You. Some of U2’s best songs.

Sound

There are a few flaws though: some tiny distortions. But even with headphones they don’t distract from the show. Also the lower frequencies are a bit thin, which makes Adam hard to hear sometimes. Pretty much all audience recordings have this problem. Seem like lower frequencies are hard to record.

Audience

A great crowd, but not very loud in the recording. Yells when they have to, but otherwise not disturbing. Bono has words with a fan though, he doesn’t seem pleased with the way he behaves. Just a small incident, that doesn’t ruin the show.

Overall

A show with Slow Dancing, One Tree Hill and Bad must be great. This show is the proof of this golden rule. A good show to put next to the Point Depot and Rotterdam performances on your Lovetown playlist.
