Performance

I Could Have Lost You/Zoo Station (9/10): I love the opening licks on the first leg, they sound really tight and less overdriven than later on in the tour. Edge in particular comes through really well between the verses, although the ending is admittedly a little weak. "It's Austin, Texas Tonight!"

The Fly (7.5/10): An average performance due to Edge's guitar problems before the first chorus and during the solo. Bono's raw voice at the end comes through nicely, however.

Even Better Than The Real Thing (8/10): No flipping through the TV channels, just a quick note from Bono as a transition from The Fly. Bono is still experimenting with the ending, it's interesting to hear!

Mysterious Ways (8.5/10): The introduction hasn't yet evolved to Sydney levels of greatness, but for a first leg performance it's good! I always appriciate a Love To Love You Baby snippet.

One (9/10): A very solid ZOO TV performance, with a Hear Us Comin' snippet - followed by a good falsetto. Not much more to say - it's One!

Until The End Of The World (8/10): Not as tight a performance as later legs, however Bono's raw lyrics at the end make up for it. A good listen!

Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (8/10): A pleasing segue out of Until The End Of The World, however Bono messes up the lyrics. He accounts for this at the end, with very powerful vocals in the last 45 seconds or so! I prefer the studio version, but this is a pleasing performance!

Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World (9/10): Wow! I believe that's Adam telling us about this one, I wasn't expecting that! I like this rendition, it's not as drawn out as later performances and Bono's energy is superb!

Angel Of Harlem (8/10): A nice performance, Bono really likes this one and performs it well. I love the crowd integration at the end! I can only imagine being there at the B-Stage...

Satellite Of Love (8/10)): A pleasing tribute to Lou Reed. A slow, medlodious tune helps bring ZOO TV closer to the fans! A competent performance!

Bad (9/10): I never hear anyone talking about the ZOO TV renditions of Bad, they're quality! The "All I Want Is You" snippet is stellar. Good audience participation combined with strong vocals from Bono make this a solid performance!

Bullet The Blue Sky (9.5/10): The introduction starts off pounding, the band are really into it! Bono performs the end very passionately. A fast rendition combined with the audience joining in make this an adequate version!

Running To Stand Still (9/10): Amazing audience participation, simply amazing. They really make this one better, Bono feeds off of their energy for a wonderful version of this song!

Where The Streets Have No Name (8.5/10): The transition from Running To Stand Still never gets old. Otherwise, this is a satisfactory performance. Bono sounds great at the end. It's Streets, of course it's going to be good!

Pride (In The Name Of Love) (8/10): I'm not the hugest fan of the ZOO TV renditions of Pride, however this is still a strong version with excellent audience participation. It's interesting to hear the end with the TV integration!

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (8.5/10): It's good to hear Bono thanking the crowd for comin' at the beginning. I like this performance - I Still Haven't Found is always a good one for singing along, no matter the tour.

Desire (9/10): The band have always loved Desire - and tonight is no exception! Bono always gets fired up for this song. A commendatory performance!

Ultraviolet (Light My Way) (9/10): One of my favourites from ZOO TV, this is an impressive performance with excellent backing vocals from The Edge. This one always hits different!

With Or Without You (9.5/10): "Let's Go To Vegas, Let's Get Married!" This has always been a powerful song, and tonight is no exception. Everybody clapping along at the end, Edge's beautiful solo, and Shine Like Stars make for a very moving rendition. One of the best I've heard from not just the first leg, but ZOO TV in general.

Love Is Blindness (8/10): As per usual, an intense peformance by Bono and Edge. A very tight solo. I wish the last line, "Blindnesss..." had more emotion to it, however since it's only the first leg it's a perfectly acceptable conclusion!

Sound

I wish this quality was avaliable for the St. Patrick's Day show, it's very, very good! I definitely wasn't expecting the world from this and was pleasantly surprised to hear how clear everyone is! This recording isn't muddy like so many others of the era. Adam's bass could be a little more profound, and there is a fade out/in with a cut encore break. These are nitpicks, however - I highly recommend, the audio quality of "Bono Is A Dinky Trabant" is perhaps one of the best from the first leg! And - bonus soundchecks included? Yes, please!
Recording: "Bono Is A Dinky Trabant" - 3.5 stars

Audience

This crowd are happy to be here! From what I can tell, they sing along with Bono and are fully attentative. Some of the first leg audiences can be rather dull, so it's good to hear the enthusiatic shouts of a happy crowd. They particularly shine in Angel Of Harlem, Running To Stand Still, and Pride (In The Name Of Love).

Overall

I'd put this in my top three ZOO TV shows from the first leg. Combine the solid audio quality with a slew of intricate performances, and you'll have a great record of the early arena side of ZOO TV. My highlights would have to be Zoo Station, Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World, Bad, Bullet The Blue Sky, and With Or Without You - I know, there are quite a lot! Listen to this show, even if you're only a distant fan of ZOO TV - you won't be disappointed!
