^ REMASTER notes:
When this recording was first shared in 2007, the info file suggested to clean up this
transfer of the master, but also noted that "it would probably be a good idea to wait on
this," since JEMS thought they still had their own - even better! - recording of this night.
But now, ten years later, I don't think that that master ever showed up. And since
this recording is - in essence - very good, I felt free to take care of the known issues
of this recording. Especially when I found out that the other known recording of this
date has in fact the encore from the 2nd show in Los Angeles (compare, f.i., the intro
of Ultra Violet: on the 2nd night Bono sings "sometimes I feel like checkin' out" twice;
on the first night - this recording! - it starts with the usual "...feel like I don't know").
Theoretically it is possible that this MH recording is actually mistaken, but since this
transfer was made by JEMS from a master cassette, I don't see any reason to doubt
this recording's provenance.
Addressing the following issues, as pointed out by Mike in the original notes:
1) patch BTBS (30 sec. from “Live From Los Angeles” [DAT Master > 1st Gen > CDR] ).
2) removal of "static and dropouts" (dubbing of right channel, as Mike suggested).
Additionally I applied the following using iZotope RX 5to clean up:
- “de-clap” (using my own setting from iZotope’s de-click)
- spectral repair (to remove some whistles & to diminish intrusive audience chat)
Furthermore, I regarded the lack of bass as something to be improved.
To obtain a satisfying result, I applied a manual equalization of the lower frequencies
(mainly a boost of the 16 to 112 range, and a little touch of 112-240 Hz.).
I treated every track separately: some tracks got more boosted than others.
I also made a fade-out after ISHFWLF, using some extra audience noise from the (left out)
encore break. And a fade-in for Desire (NB: the transition between Desire and UV I left
as it was - I don't think the Mirror-ball man made any call that night).
I hope that, at some point, JEMS - and/or MH - will allow me to share a lossless version
of this remaster / clean-up version.
For the time being, I intent to only share mp3's (224 kb/s) of this remaster on u2start.

#ORIGINAL NOTES (from Mike, Jan. 4, 2007):
I received this as two large WAV files transferred by Erik of JEMS.
I joined the files and adjusted the speed as close as I could (it was very slow,
more so than I usually find). I then deleted the dead air at the beginning and
end of the show, added small fades at those respective points and split the show
into tracks, all using Goldwave.
Sound quality is very good, and everything comes in sounding pretty close and clear.
Problems - There is what I presume to be a tape flip exactly one hour into the show.
A small part of "Bullet the Blue Sky" is lost due to this. In its place is dead air,
which I decided to leave alone. "Desire" also comes in a bit late, possibly because
the taper turned off the walkman during the encore.
Static and dropouts (appear to only be left channel) at the end of "Pride" and at the
end of "I Still Haven't Found." Upon closer inspection these appear to be times
where the left channel went out. I don't know why, but maybe it was a loose mic.
This could be fixed sort of by copying the right channel to the left, but for the
purists I again decided to leave it alone.
So basically this is not a flawless recording, and it might be worth cleaning up a
bit more, perhaps by adding the missing portion of "Bullet" from another source, or
even doing a matrix with another source or sources. However, it would probably be
a good idea to wait on this because Erik has told me that JEMS taped this show, and
if and when he finds the JEMS recording it may be much better than this (though this
is very good).
