Performance

A rather interesting performance for the 4th overall show on the Outside Broadcast, which is an eventful performance from start to finish, full of two hours of good and bad moments. While, for the most part, the band deliver a respectful performance, which has their continued improvements in delivering the material as they get further used to performing on this leg of the tour tonight, the band are plagued with some unpredictable tech issues and some other moments which showcase the vast unpredictability of live music.

The show begins with a strong run of Zoo Station to Until the End of the World, featuring a tight band performance and excellent vocals from Bono, showcasing the smoother flow of the set when compared to the previous three shows before this one, with the most noteworthy performances from this run being The Fly, Even Better Than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways and One which are all fantastic performances however during New Year's Day the band encounter a technical issue when their In-Ear Monitors (IEMs) fail right before the song's first chorus resulting in Bono having to count everyone in to continue it also doesn't help that the song was just newly introduced to the tour too with this performance being the third overall performance on Zoo TV. Hence, they must deal with this tech issue and find their stride in performing the War classic again, as they hadn't played it for two years. Thankfully, the next song in the set, Tryin' to Throw, is an improvement, and despite lacking the Love and Affection and Three Little Birds snippets, it's your average fun, loose rendition.

A unique B-Stage set follows, containing a fine rendition of Angel of Harlem minus Bono accidentally flipping the location of the second and third verses and singing them in a different order. What's notable in this B-stage set, however, is the absence of When Love Comes To Town which is most likely due to the band being unsatisfied with the previous three renditions of the song and wanting to rehearse it a bit more before putting it back into the set so instead we get I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and the return of Satellite Of Love which has had a two show absence.

Bad also returns from a two-show absence to kick off the Live Staples section of the show. It's a unique rendition featuring a fan coming on stage during the song's 1st chorus and a drawn-out intro where Bono chooses to ditch the usual All I Want Is You snippet and snippet Elton John's Candle in the Wind and Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side before continuing with Sunday Bloody Sunday which brings another noteworthy aspect of the show. This is the only Outside Broadcast show where Bad and Sunday Bloody Sunday are performed together. The show continues with mild hiccups in places with your usual excellent Zoo TV renditions of Bullet the Blue Sky, Running To Stand Still, Where the Streets Have No Name and Pride, which ends the eventful main set off in a respectful manner.

However, the messiness isn't over yet, as the encores once again introduce the audience to Bono's stage persona known as the Mirror Ball Man. He and the band deliver a messy rendition of Desire, followed by Bono's usual gag of calling the White House to speak to the President only to be told that he can't. Following this moment, the highlights of this encore occur with both terrific versions of Ultra Violet and With or Without You, which is then capped off by the standard duo of Love Is Blindness and Elvis' Can't Help Falling In Love, which puts an end to this both interesting and eventful performance.

Sound

The best you're going to get with the soundboard as while the audience recording does add some atmosphere, reducing some of the dryness, the soundboard has on its own you can't do much as the quality on the audience source alone isn't the best still, it does feature the whole show unlike the most versions which cut off after Love Is Blindness so this does have the positive of having the Elvis cover that is typically left off on the usual soundboard only copies.
Recording: "Noiseless matrix" - 4 stars

Audience

While I couldn't hear the audience due to the recording focussing on the music, I'm going to make an educated guess and say that they are probably once again on the same level as the previous three shows, which is quiet on most of the new Achtung Baby songs but eventually warming up when the band start shifting to the War to Rattle and Hum material.

Overall

Overall, an eventful show from the earlier stages of the Outside Broadcast leg, featuring the band still figuring things out but dealing with technical issues and the overall vast unpredictability of live shows, while the flaws and mistakes prevent me from being able to rate this anywhere in the 4+ stars rating, I will say when there weren't tech issues this once again showcased how the band are improving every night so far on the tour leg which leaves me hopeful for the rest of the tour leg when the band have finally hit their stride.

Highlights: The Fly, Even Better Than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, One, I Still Haven't Found, Bad, Ultra Violet (Light My Way), With or Without You
Lowlights: New Year's Day, Desire
