The fifth show on the Outside Broadcast performance is a fantastic performance that, despite having a few jitters here and there, ends up being a tight performance that flows smoothly compared to the previous night in Washington. The band is more settled and continues to get into the swing of things. Bono's voice is in great form. However, he sometimes messes up in places, such as starting too early on Bullet and messing up the lyrics on Angel of Harlem and Sunday Bloody Sunday, leading to interesting improv lyrics made up on the fly.
The opening Achtung Baby run of songs flows smoothly from Zoo Station to Arms, all being strong and featuring few mistakes. However, it is still noticeable that the band are still trying to figure out New Year's Day, which, while being a tighter airing of the War track compared to the previous 2nd Washington rendition, has the flaw of a rough transition into the song's 2nd verse. In a more positive light, some highlights from this section included excellent renditions of The Fly, Mysterious Ways, One and an extended, fun and loose rendition of Arms, with this section also featuring the return of Larry's singing section, which took a three-show absence after the opening night on August 12th.
The B-Stage section is quite packed with it, featuring five songs being performed tonight with the return of a more polished When Love Comes To Town, which happens to be the smoothest rendition on the leg so far, with the extra rehearsal time done behind the scenes for this one being very noticeable. This set also includes the highlights of the rare stripped-down renditions of I Still Haven't Found, and All I Want Is You, which are always nice to hear.
The Live Staples was also done well despite early hiccups present on Sunday Bloody Sunday and Bullet the Blue Sky. When the latter finally got things sorted out, it ended up being a very enjoyable rendition, with Edge's terrific guitar work being a highlight and catching my attention the most. The Running To Stand Still, Streets and Pride performances were also very good, much like your standard Zoo TV renditions and ended the main set at a high.
While the encores started a bit messy due to the start of Desire being a bit messy and overall being done cleaner at other shows, the band quickly recovered from this blunder and, for the rest of this section, delivered a strong encore performance with magnificent versions, of Ultra Violet and With or Without You with a noticeable set change also being present here in which the band have dropped Can't Help Falling In Love and instead end the show off with Love Is Blindness.
Sound
The star rating of the recording listed here definitely doesn't define the copy of the show that I listened to as the one I had had a clear sound that, despite needing some cuts patched in during the start of All I Want Is You and Running To Stand Still's second verse was a very enjoyable listening experience which the music clearly captured despite having some noticeable audience chatter picked up too along with some screamers that did as the show ran its course started to get on my nerves but aside from this my version was a very good recording of the show. Recording: Audience microphone - 3 stars
Audience
Still on the same level as the previous audiences, they sing on some newer songs, mainly Mysterious Ways' chorus and One. Still, for the most part, they're more into the earlier material as they're noticeably more lively from the B-Stage onwards.
Overall
Overall, this is a mostly fantastic show from the early stages of Outside Broadcast, with the band really starting to hit their stride in the performance aspect of things. While there are still a few mistakes in places, mainly from Bono on the lyrical side of things, they're trivial when compared to the mistakes present on previous shows of the leg. The setlist flows much smoother now, and the performances have the feeling that they will only get better from here onwards now that the band have a sense of what they're doing.
Highlights: Mysterious Ways, One, She's A Mystery To Me, Tryin' to Throw You Arms, I Still Haven't Found, All I Want Is You, Bullet the Blue Sky, Ultra Violet and With or Without You
