1. I remember getting a couple of audio cassettes of these sessions as a gift from a friend in Wales who I traded another band with back at the time, back in early 1991.

It was just before stuff hit the fan, then I read the article in the NME about just how hot they were. It was kinda worrying, but I wasn't selling the things, like many U2 fans at the time no doubt, I ended up with a copy.

It was amazing to hear all these new U2 songs. There were some great ideas and some absolute gems in there. I was still listening to it on a regular basis long after Achtung came out, and it still gets a playthrough even now once or twice a year.

What I remember reading back in the day is that they were reportedly DAT tapes taken from a hotel room of a band member or crew. I've no idea how accurate that is, but its always seemed pretty plausible to me.

Bono has described the tapes as gobbledegook understandably as it's quite an unintended insight into unfinished U2 work in progress, and we all know how perfectionist they are, so it must have felt like being seen in your underpants and little else... you know a little exposed. Maybe Bono felt a little embarrassed with one or two lines he sings, and perhaps it all felt like a bit of an invasion of privacy back at the time as well, and I can understand that.

I've read at some point since that Edge was very pissed off about it all. But I'm sure their anger and frustration was justifiably largely at the people who actually stole them and of course the commercial manufacturers who put them out there then made money off the back of them. That said they are a fantastic document of the transition between what many people consider to be their two masterpiece studio albums.

I have a sneaking suspicion that on occasions since this fiasco, they have sometimes let the odd thing or two leak *deliberately* to get a bit of a feel for people's reactions to see if they're going in the right direction or not (I think the recent Kygo episode could potentially be a bit of that but who knows). I don't think that was the case with the STS / Hansa sessions though. Paul McGuinness was furious about it I understand.

The 3cd Silver set of 'Salome' covers most of the interesting stuff for sure.

The extended 7 disc set (which I think only eventually surfaced a few years later and I don't think ever had a silver pressing - may well be wrong though) doesn't have a massive amount of additional stuff. The extra material is largely fairly uninteresting drum / synth tracks for the most part, and I think there's even more of the Rickenbacker 12-string overdubbing on Salome on the 7 disc set.

That said there is a small gem of Bono & Edge comically demo'ing an early version of 'Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World' for Daniel Lanois, plus an extensive session of Danny doing some vocal scat overdubbing onto the backing track for 'Woman' (plus the more complete version of that track itself, which I'd not heard until this 7cd set).

I didn't know there was a 5LP vinyl set. I have one of the two different 2LP sets, given to me a long time ago, but never got round to playing it (no longer have a deck either now), but have always assumed it was the same stuff as the original audio cassettes I had back in the day.
  2. Is this available digitally?

I've got an album in iTunes with some Achtung demos. I don't know what version it is, I know that it's got an Instrumental mix of EBTTRT.

These updated notes reflect the "Fan Working Titles" from the
original Salome set, with my notes on the new tracks. Numbers in
brackets { } indicates what disc/track this song was on the
    original Salomé 3 CD Set.

The main difference between this new 7 cd set and the original is
the addition of a single cd of 5 tracks with songs similar to the
Back Mask U2 (So Cruel), a ROUGH demo version of Tryin' To Throw
Your Arms Around The World, along with 3 addtional cd's of mainly
drum tracks (some with some faint synthesizer)

Thanks to the original creator of the 3 CD notes, Sira Vista!

Check out noiseless remaster of hansa studio outtakes !
    It’s pretty amazing!!!

  11. anyone got a link to the 7 disc set still please?
  12. The issue with the noiseless remaster, is he/she used the original 3 CD set as a source. The 7 CD set, is cleaner and more complete/less cuts. I wish they would do a remastering of that. Or Mr Hosa have a stab at it.
