Here's my heartfelt drawing tribute to Bono who turns 60. His lyrics provided me guidance and entertainment while his voice led the soundtrack of my life.
There was a lot that went into this drawing starting with the reference photo taken from U2's first show in the Philippines: (1) paid membership for presale access to tickets with a good vantage point; (2) buying a compact camera with good zoom; (3) flying to the city where the concert was held; and (4) lining up early in the venue.
I went for a black & white look using grey tone colored pencils on black paper to give it the feel of The Joshua Tree, which is my favorite U2 album and the one they toured when I took the photo. Because I did not have to plug in any color values, the drawing took much faster than I expected. I finished it many days before his birthday. So I decided to draw the rest of his bandmates (why not!).
Maybe this was fate telling me that it would be foolish to draw Bono alone because U2 is always about the sum being greater than the parts. The Edge image is also taken from the Philippine Arena show. Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton are from the second night of the band's Singapore sling.
These drawings are of my favorite band referenced from my photos taken from concerts I watched (and uploaded here in U2start.com). It doesn't get more meaningful than this. I even made a layout to see how it might look like if I decide to frame and hang it (Should I?)
