In February 1993, U2 lead singer Bono learned that his hero, Johnny Cash, would be performing in Dublin, Ireland. Bono quickly wrote "The Wanderlust" in hopes that he could get Cash to record the song with U2. Bono reached Johnny the day before the Dublin concert and convinced him to do the song. The song was recorded on the afternoon of February 8, 1993, and U2 joined Cash on stage at his concert later that evening.
