Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief...we know that; and I've never had a problem with Bono using Biblical references in his writing. That he draws so much inspiration from there is great, especially when for some of his fans, that's the only time they'll be exposed to hearing Bible verses. But I think it is the recycling that jars as i listen to this EP.

I see SOE being very different because it was intended as a companion piece to SOI and reusing lyrics there was about creating a thread to link two ideas and I really did like that idea.

In this context though, the repetition derails me because I recognise those words and he's not trying to create a thread.

Anyhow, that's the way my head works and I'm not trying to criticise anyone else's delight in DOA..

    Cheers

I'm wondering if it's 'us' the die-hard fans who scrutinise every word, every musical note, every twist and turn by the band that we do notice that repetition whereas a casual listener or a new listener won't study the lyrics or the music as fervently as you or I and therefore that armoury in Bono's repertoire might resonate with those fans as if it's the first time they've heard it and it excites them

Regarding a 'thread' - I can see one that binds these songs as a coherent EP so as a stand-alone piece of work it's interesting and I like the fact that the band are not taking the 'easy' route (well, maybe the Sheeran track aside) with this seemingly transient release

    Anyhoo cheers

The "thread" idea is interesting. What you said about the link between SOI and SOE. Especially with 13. But the "repetition" you mention about Days Of Ash didn't bother me because I see it as part of a bigger picture "thread" that goes back to, if not Boy, then at least October where they started to get all mystical. Just like "all you need is love" is a "thread" that runs through a big chunk of the second half of the Beatles work, "there is no them" relates to a bigger theme in Bono's writing that has do with the fact that we are all "brothers in Christ" -- that theme is present even in Summer of Love even though it's not explicitly mentioned but the fact that he is questioning why people from the non-first-world part of the world should be treated differently from people from the European part implies the same thing -- that we are not separate but we keep creating separation and the separation creates injustice and suffering. The repetition is essential to his viewpoint on what's wrong with the world.

Totally respect your feeling on the new album -- we all have our own take and our own way of hearing and feeling things and this is not to deny yours. I just wanted to write down my own two cents on this because while I paused for a moment on "there is no them" on Ash, it was more of a recognition of "ah, I see why he wants to fit that theme in here again".

  3. Interesting this post, my top songs from this century (I based it on the songs I've listened to the most since SOE was released (based on my last.fm stats)). Surprisingly, no Songs of Innocence tracks made the list, but I love a bunch of songs from that album

    1) beautiful day
    2) elevation
    3) new york
    4) vertigo
    5) sometimes you cant make it on your own
    6) lights of home
    7) electrical storm
    8) i'll go crazy if i don't go crazy tonight
    9) summer rain
    10) all because of you

I took that as ‘after’ ATYCLB meaning any tracks from that album aren’t eligible. Maybe the original poster can clarify.

It becomes a lot harder taking songs from ATYCLB out of the equation.

And yes I think it’s a Topic worth posting on its own. I would be fascinated to see everyone’s 10 fav tracks since ATYCLB.

    If you have the time….

Post your fave 10 songs post ATYCLB ( not including ) in no particular order.

I would be curious to see what you select.

I found it surprisingly not that difficult.

I had 11 fairly set the hardest thing from that point was dropping Every Breaking Wave to the bin.
  6. Sorry I hadn’t responded sooner. I was thinking about my own top 10 which I’m still considering and also processing your choices which I think generally show a range of styles so perhaps rules out my suggestion of it being a style thing with the new songs why you aren’t liking them.

I meant including ATYCLB as well but it was every bit as interesting seeing your favourites from after that album. I should maybe start a new thread for it. Would you prefer a post ATYCLB discussion then rather than including that album?
  7. Favorite two moments on DOA

    1) Bono’s impassioned singing from 2:24 to 3:08 on OLAAT coupled with Larry’s drums

    2) the solo in Tears
  8. I finally succumbed to Song of the Future today.
  9. Let us all realize the face that this album, despite the political trash they insist put it in, is the only real piece of music since 2025.
