On my last day in SF, I spent some time in Golden Gate Park, and visited the de Young Museum. One of the exhibit’s was by a photographer I’d never heard of — Hitoshi Sugimoto. Let me tell you, I spent 3 hours exploring that exhibit, simply enchanted by his work. As a photographer, Sugimoto doesn’t just have a unique eye, but a unique vision.

    Well, fast forward a couple of years, and how surprised was I to see one of Sugimoto’s photographs as the cover for the new U2 album! Beautiful.

    Living next to where Sugimoto took the picture, I was really surprised and somehow proud to see this on the cover of a U2 record.
  2. Take a similar picture and upload it to the forum.
  3. 17 years on.
  4. Shite. Time flies. It really does.

    The could-have-been-great album that they didn't quite nail.
  5. Was the complete track list of the early review copies with Winter and Every Breaking Wave ever known?
  6. Don't believe there was ever any promo sent out with anything other than the final track list. There were a couple of interviewers who were allowed to sit and listen in studio with the band present, and they heard early versions of the album. On occasion the band played selected pieces for others. I myself got a listen in early August 2008 to a handful of songs.

    Q Magazine was one of those outfits that were in studio to interview the band ahead of release. They had a run down of the 11 tracks on the album. The list they published was:

    * Stand Up Comedy
    * Magnificent
    * Get On Your Boots
    * Moment of Surrender
    * Unknown Caller
    * No Line on the Horizon
    * I'll Go Crazy
    * Every Breaking Wave
    * Breathe
    * Winter
    * Cedars of Lebanon

    No idea if that was the planned track listing at the time or just the way the magazine jotted them down. But "Cedars" was planned for last and it seemed they liked the transition from "Breathe" to "Winter" so maybe. "White as Snow" wasn't included at this point.

    That was late summer 2008, after the album had been cut back to one disc. The other piece of info we have is the film "Linear" which also used an early track list.

    * Unknown Caller
    * Breathe
    * Winter
    * White as Snow
    * No Line on the Horizon
    * Fez - Being Born
    * Magnificent
    * Stand Up Comedy
    * Get On Your Boots
    * Moment of Surrender
    * Cedars of Lebanon

    This one is in the sequence of what was in the film. Would it have matched up to the album? No saying it would have. But it's the best guide we have. "EBW" is removed, and "White as Snow" is now appearing on the song listing. "I'll Go Crazy" isn't present so perhaps this was earlier in time than the list above? They went back and forth on whether or not to include "EBW" right to the end.

    All of the physical promo I'm aware of includes the album as it was released:

    * No Line on the Horizon
    * Magnificent
    * Moment of Surrender
    * Unknown Caller
    * I'll Go Crazy
    * Get On Your Boots
    * Stand Up Comedy
    * Fez - Being Born
    * White as Snow
    * Breathe
    * Cedars of Lebanon

    They were being super cautious about leaks. Journalists were invited to listening sessions at local Universal branches and had to listen on site. They weren't allowed any sort of recording devices in those sessions. And then in the end, Universal put the album on sale a few weeks early in Australia and leaked it themselves...

    I still have the Q magazine with that original list. Good memories.

    As for the Linear track sequence, I say put "Soon" at the beginning, swap places for Unknown Caller/Breathe, take out Boots. Then you've got a solid album.

    How was what you heard in Aug 2008 to what the final versions were? I would love to hear the early version(s) of this album.
