The Smiths are my favourite band after U2, and one of the only bands I know not to have a single duff track in their entire back catalogue.
Morrissey's solo stuff is great too and very underrated. his set before U2 on friday is/was well worth a watch, and i'm off to see him for myself tomorrow, which i can't wait for!
so yeah, i thought we were lacking a thread on the greatest indie outfit of all time, so here we are.
Yep, saw Mozza's performance before U2. I wonder why he plays most of his stuff slower than before.
I'm far from being an expert on his solo or Smiths stuff, but You are the quarry is a masterpiece.
I agree, a great band and probably the one I listen to the most after u2... never been that into Mozza's solo stuff though. There are some great live gigs available on the net which show how great the band were in concert, the 86 stuff is good with the 2nd guitarist bur prefer the earlier material. They do have a duff song- golden light- can't stand it.
Golden Lights is a cover though, so i tend not to count it, in the interest of keeping their batting average up and whatnot.
and yeah i've noticed about the tempo thing as well, i reckon it's an age thing, a la U2's irving plaza 11 O'clock Tick Tock. sometimes it works well, like making There Is A Light softer and more pensive, but othertimes it does, admittedly, kill the urgency.
Been listening to The Queen is Dead for weeks now, a truly extraordinary piece of music. Morrissey is a pure poet, I just can't get enough of Cemetery Gates.
Agreed!! I couldn't believe Mozz opened for U2! For me throw in Depeche Mode and that would have been heaven!! My top bands ever!! Love the Mozz, Love the DM and I'm in love with our U2!!!
I have to admit that I haven't heard a single song of this guy(s) in my life - not that I can remember at least. But I have heard great things from them.
So, anyone fancies doing some kind of compilation so I can youtube it and start to make an opinion on them? Thaaaanks in advance
sergio, you won't be disappointed, morrissey is a lyrical genius and they're one of the most melodic and emotionally connecting bands in history.
as for a best of, i submitted a 20-song Smiths list for the 'Best Of' thread a while ago, and i still stand by it, although as i said before they have no lowlights as such:
I Started Something I Couldn't Finish
Is It Really So Strange?
Ask These Things Take Time How Soon Is Now?
Shoplifters of the World Unite
This Charming Man
Sheila Take A Bow
Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
Back To The Old House

The Headmaster Ritual
The Queen Is Dead
Rubber Ring The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
Nowhere Fast

Cemetry Gates I Know It's Over There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
the ones in bold are the best of the best, imo.
EDIT: i'll do a morrissey's solo career one too, for lack of anything else to do.
