1. Great pics.
  2. I took some U2 leave and I have been practicing some new mixing and mastering skills these last few weeks - thanks to @Hoserama

This is my latest project: an IEM (no counts, click-track & tech-talk - this is an old-skool band, but yeah, Mick's got one!) mixed with an audience source.

I've just shared it on iorr.org and I'm curious to see how it's going to be received over there

Anyway, this is for my U2-Stones friends as well

    #mixing & mastering NOTES:
The recently surfaced XAVEL "IEM mixes" are quite astonishing but,
unfortunately (in my opinion), lack the ambient noise typical of live
concerts. Mixing an audience source in seemed like a good idea and not
    really that hard to do.

More challenging is the fact that the XAVEL IEM's are already processed
('cooked up,' as my tutor elegantly puts it) with limiters (for sure) &
compressors (likely). And, too, that the only available audience source
is severely compromised by heavy near-by talking ("chat") and screaming.
On the plus side, the audience recording has a very nice bass to add in.

But I like to think that I'm pretty good at cleaning up audience sources
with the "Spectral Repair" option in the iZotope RX05. Mind you, there is
no magic setting here: everything has to be taken out manually. Perhaps
even some more chat could have been taken out, but at some points it's
just hard to do it without noticing (so at some points one already might).

The main challenge for me was to mix the two sources in such a way that a
"best of both worlds" was achieved. The XAVEL has Mick really high in the
mix, whereas Keith and Ronnie are sometimes hard to find.
I was suggested to use a "New York" compression (parallel) on the XAVEL IEM,
in order to better balance the vocals and guitars. So I gave it my best shot
and I think it worked quite well. Then to finish it off, I used some dynamics,
and exciter on the separate sources, and a punch of (stereo) imager in the
final mix. It's not an exact science and all open for interpretation I guess,
but this is my take and I hope you like it

  6. Ah...happy to hear it's already well received on my home turf, so to say.

I really don't consider this to be a slam-dunk. I still got so much to learn, but after 6 mixdowns, I thought it was time to let this go (and work on the next one).

    Enjoy

    #mixing & mastering NOTES:

Full rig audience recording was kindly offered by Alysha and just perfect
for the matrix. Somewhat distant, but no intrusive screams and/or chat!
Only gave it a de-click (aka "de-clap") treatment in the RX 05. Then
mixed in mostly bass and ambient (audience) noise.

For the XAVEL IEM again I used the same (NY compression) trick as the
London 1 matrix (LGJ-LNDN1) in order to better balance the vocals with
the guitars - and all the rest basically. Perhaps the compression was
done a little more sophisticated now having learned from the first one.

Overall a pretty smooth ride, although it took me a few mixdowns to come
up with a satisfactory result. Main challenge was Keith's set, as the
master's vocals were really low in the XAVEL boot to start with. So I
gave that set a slightly different mix. It's not perfect, but I guess it
never really was - no offense to Keith, it's the XAVEL I'm referring to.

Alysha's recording starts somewhere halfway JJF. I've tried to patch it
with the Bol&StrettonBull source, but I didn't manage to get it much better
then the plain mixed XAVEL IEM's, so I just faded Alysha's source slowly in
(one might hear the sound becomes more "thick" - or "full" if you like).

I think this show makes a great companion with the London 1 first night.
No less than six different songs, and a slightly rearranged order of the
usual songs. I'm not sure if everyone loves the Florence Welch vocals on
Wild Horses - still not sure myself actually - but it does account for some
    rarity.
The feel of the "CD2" set is also quite different than that of the London 1
show. Mick's voice has become a bit overworked (or something like that) and,
as a result, more raw sounding in last part of the set.

I wish I came up with a better title than "Too For Dartford" (pun intended),
but I guess I don't have the balls for "That Double Shit Dub...", which is
actually the better title when you think about it... Ah well, you can't always...

MANY, MANY THANKS to Alysha for recording & suggesting to use his pull,
and to Andrea82 for liberating the XAVEL boots!
    +
Huge thanks to Sharebear/Hoserama for his ongoing encouragement and advice!
    &
