1. I keep mentioning them in the Pearl Jam thread. As far as I can tell, they don't have one of their own.

I now remember why I think of SP as a "grunge" band. It was the inclusion of their classic track "Drown" on the Singles soundtrack - which, for those of you who might not know, has two Pearl Jam tracks, two from Soundgarden/Chris Cornell, one from Alice in Chain, amongst others. This album, along with the Trainspottng soundrack, are (in my opinion, of course) the two best soundtracks from the 90's, if not ever. No, I haven't forgotten about Saturday Night Fever.'

Are movie soundtracks still made? They don't seem to have the weight they use to. Dang, wrong thread again.
  2. great band, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and Adore are all masterpieces.
  3. Great band, got to see one of the better reincarnations of them a few years ago when Jimmy was still around. Played hits like Today, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, and new favorites like Tarantula and G.L.O.W., and classic b-sides like Speed Kills and Transformer.

Amazing show, couldn't believe I was even in the same room as Billy Corgan.

Now I'm afraid he's too much of an ass for my tastes- his ego just brewed over time and he's such a control freak over that "band" I can't stand it. And the music is not even close to what it was/should be.
  4. I had earlier stated that the album Gish was "dull" and that the track "Starla" (which is essential SP) was a "Disarm" b-side when it was in fact a b-side of "I Am One" which is from Gish. So am will eat my words and say the Gish-era is worth considering if you want to get into Billy Corgan's band. I still find Gish from start to finish a bore.

I think "Siva" is one of the coolest, most essential Pumpkins songs to date.
  6. 1979 is definitely one of of the great anthems of the 90s - it really captures the whole apathethic gen x teen spiritl - lyrics are much better than similar songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit (which as a song doesn't match up to the hype for me)

Is that pretty much their masterpiece? - to me their other stuff I've listened to doesn't seem to be as good, eg. I like the verses in Tonight, Tonight but the bombastic, unmelodic chorus ruins the song for me.

Siamese Dream is outstanding - better than Mellon Collie. Pretty much every track could have been a hit. The singles "Today" and "Disarm," along with "Mayonaise" are my personal favourites. Get this album - one of the best from teh 1990's.

And yes, "1979" is a classic - MAYBE their best ever.
  8. to me Mayonaise is the best thing they ever did.

i had another listen to Gish the other day though, great record.

would you guys recommend Pisces Iscariot? i'm always a bit cautious when it comes to odds and sods collections.

Some people really, really love it- I'm only a fan of their cover of Landslide. Not even "Soothe", the other favorite- which I believe is sung by James Iha- does it for me.

Some hits. Some misses. That why they were b-sides and outtakes, I suppose. As I have already said, however, it has "Starla" which would be in my top 5 SP tunes.
  11. Okay listened to Today, Disarm & Mayonaise - don't really like them, they're good in parts but I don't like the heavy, unmelodic parts. I think I live 1979 because it is so cohesive.
