1. Without 70s there wouldn't have been 80s - and that doesn't mean the 70s are their "best decade", which is what we're asking here
  2. Here's the thing: people say that 90's were their moment of "freedom" or when they were "innovative". but what were the 80's then? Pop was different from previous U2, but not very innovative compared to the music that was dominating clubs in 96-97. They even borrowed sampled from other bands in the album (and it's my favorite U2 album), but in the 80's all you can hear was freaking Milli Vanilli and glam rock bands. No other band sounded like U2 then. The Unforgettable Fire was a departure from traditional U2 as dramatic as Achtung Baby (if not more, as some songs like God Part II and Night And Day already hinted their transformation).

Hmmm my favourite song is Out of control which was released in the 70's. You might be onto something there !!

Agreed. If they weren't original in the 80's they would've never become rock's hottest ticket and the best band in the world.
Plus, like you said in another post, the amount of material they brought out was higher, and so was the amount of excellent songs.
Just look at the best of 1980-1990 and best of 1990-2000 CD's and compare the tracklists...
People tend to get a bit blinded by the ZooTV tour me thinks...
  6. The 90s are only what they are because they built on what was done in the 80s. Can't have The Fly without politically aware and overly modest 80s Bono, etc.

that means the most important were 70's, because if it wasn't - it wouldn't be 80's. And if Larrys mom and dad didn't marry... (sorry, but it's the same type of arguments)
  8. It's a no-brainer: the 90s.
  9. it´s really hard to judge. personally I love the 90´s but...had to vote for 80´s
  10. WAR-UF-JT-R&H or.............AB-ZOOROPA-PASSENGERS-POP

    The 80's
