The single appeared on The Joshua Tree album and Best of 1980-1990/B-sides compilation. It was the first single that U2 released on CD. The Righteous Brothers and the Walker Brothers, particularly the album Climate of Hunter by Scott Walker, are said to have inspired the song. full article here

Right about this time my buddy and I decided to take the day off school and headed to our local (mall) record shop and wait for them to open. We were the first to purchase and we bought 1 each of the LP and cassette. That was the beginning... we spent the rest of the day driving all over Ft. Lauderdale listening to the tape. 1 song at a time, with several imperfect rewind attempts to replay or relisten to a certain melody, riff or lyric... then RTST came on. We had to pull to the side of the road for that one. Breathtaking. The Unforgettable Fire and Live Aid had catapulted them to arenas previously, but at this moment I realized (to my simple, twisted and shattered 18 year old ego) that U2 was no longer just "my" band... I had to let go and truly share them with the world. I'd been hanging on to the inevitable for too long and would have to swallow pride and take solace in the fact that "I heard them first. " And the rest is history, folks.

Just had to share as I stroll down memory lane.

    Peace and love!
Wow, great story. So was Running To Stand Still the song that made you give up on hoarding U2 for yourself and just share it with the rest of the universe?
  5. Robertson packed just a handful of song fragments, but the storm, the new location and U2 sparked his creativity. He and Bono improvised lyrics while the rest of the band provided backup, leading to a 22-minute take that would be edited down into "Sweet Fire of Love." The track would surface on Robertson's self-titled debut the following year, along with "Testimony," which also featured the band.

    I never knew these songs...
  6. Sweet Fire of Love ROCKS ;-)
i bought the album in 1987 and this song should had been a HIIIIIITTTTTT SINGLE!

Haha. No... That pretty much happened 1/2 way through Streets... Running was that first downshift in the album that made us just slow down and pull over. Probably kind of like Every Breaking Wave would today... I know it makes no sense, it was just that particular moment in time we looked at each other and simultaneously said "pull over!"

  9. I am listening to the album now, it's indeed pretty amazing! And it's great to hear Joshua Tree era Bono from time to time.
  10. Mothers of the Disappeared... my least favourite one on the whole album... and my God, what a song it is.
  11. Listening to the whole album in my car for the first time in several years. This album still kicks *ss!!
