Joshua Tree Tour 2017
Legs (3): Leg 1 - North America, Leg 2 - Europe, Leg 3 - The Americas
Shows: 54

  1. But you were BD #1 defender!
What's next? Saying that the megaphone was a bad idea?
  2. I don't like the whole encore.
  3. Not the whole encore but they should end with "40" They did it in 1987 too. They never skip BD and One. But OOC suits me too just like in 360 tour.
  4. To me, MS and The Little Things together don't work at all, much less as closers.

For once I agree they should skip the post JT songs, unless its rare like The Fly or something from Pop.
  6. Totally agreed. Saw them in Seattle...the pre-JT material and JT itself is just transcendent...FANTASTIC.

    BUT

The encore is the only problematic part of the show - it by NO means ruins it, but it's the weakest part of the show by a mile.

Beautiful Day is DEFINITELY given new life with the re-arrangement, and while I would usually take or leave the song, now I'd be happy to keep it in.

Elevation just has to go in my opinion. I have a bit of a bias because I always cringe at the clunky lyrics, but they don't do anything fresh with it, and the way it is presented (house lights on, black and white shots of each band member) is an obvious nod to the Elevation tour, but no thanks...I'd take something that isn't so overly played and re-tread.

Ultraviolet is the strongest song in encore, but somehow weakened by the message - I fear I'm treading on thin ice here - but the song never really came across as a song about feminism, so it seems like too much a leap to tie the two together. I liked the optics of how they performed it in 360 much better. Great song, GREAT message, but the two just don't tie together. If they kept it this way, would be better to put it after Beautiful Day - the visuals and message are more cohesive without Elevation in the middle. Just...stop playing elevation...please. Stop. Okay, I'll stop.

One...just tired of this song at this point. Kind of let the monologue pass and song pass...though I did like the visuals from the original video and (admittedly) freaked out when the "hear us coming lord" snippet ended it

Miss Sarajevo - I love the passengers album...there are beautiful moments and ideas in this song...to me the most impactful song visually / message-wise of the encore.

Little Things that Give You Away - interesting to hear live but here's the problem...it's a downer of a song. And at that point after One, Miss Sarajevo, and now a new song that is a slow build and with a sad undercurrent, the encore has been in a funk for a good 20 minutes by the song is over. Not ending on a high note, but feels more like a slow drag down to from dizzying heights earlier in the show.

Now, methinks U2 must be sensing this because they gave everyone a much needed injection of elation with I Will Follow...it was MUCH better to close with...if they ended the show with the drumstick taps from Little Things I think everyone would have shuffled out with much of the elation erased.

So...not sure how many of you got this far in my mini book...but if U2 can fix this clunky encore...they will have show that is a contender for top three tours of their entire career.

I totally agree. And I haven't even experienced it live. Hope is that they've got it worked out by Miami... Sarajevo/Little Things definitely a yawner back-to-back to end the show...

Agreed, I like al these songs, but they just don't work together like that.
  9. I was taught not to present a problem without a solution...nobody asked...but here is the encore this tour deserves:

The show is already structured in three parts:
    1. The band leading up to JT
    2. JT itself
    3. The problematic encore

It's an easy fix - the encore doesn't stick the landing because it should be about U2's reaction to the JT.

So it stands to reason the encore should be only AB/Zooropa/Passengers/Pop songs. ATYCLB songs already seem out of place...and I think that's because that album was a reaction to AB/Zooropa/Pop. So here is MY fix in seven songs (7 being the amount played in Seattle):

    1. Zoo Station
    2. The Fly
    3. Ultraviolet
    4. Zooropa (perhaps the version from I&E that can address the debate of immigration when played in the US, and the state of the EU and immigration when played in Europe)
    5. Dirty Day or Please
    6. Stay - full band of course
    7. The Wanderer

I saw this show in Seattle and I swear closing it with the Wanderer would be absolute perfection. This song was made to close this tour...sonically, stylistically, thematically perfect as a closer.
  10. The Wanderer is Johnny Cash's song. It just doesn't sound great with Bono. I love the rest of your encore though.

Nice list but I would change the wanderer for The Fly (Elevation tour version) and change The Fly voor Even Better.

Totally agree with this. I almost think it would be better to move up little things after BD and then put another upbeat hit like the Fly after it so the energy stays up, right now it's a downer of an ending with One -> MS -> Little Things
